Synopsis
Directed by John Turturro, ROMANCE AND CIGARETTES is a dark but romantic musical about the repercussions of infidelity. Nick Murder played by James Gandolfini (of THE SOPRANOS fame) is a blue collar ironworker who becomes involved with lingerie sales-girl Lula (Kate Winslet). Nick's wife Kitty (Susan Sarandon) discovers the affair and is consumed with rage, the marriage unsurprisingly crumbles and in she throws him out. The shock of finding himself homeless forces Nick to face up to the mistakes he has made and decide what it is in his life that he truly needs. Turturro wrote and directed, making a successful move from in front of the camera to behind it. His use of song as a device to emphasise emotions the characters cannot express verbally adds another dimension to the dialogue.

From The Studio
Set in contemporary America, ROMANCE & CIGARETTES is a modern day musical, a dark and passionate comedy which tells the story of one man's journey into infidelity and redemption. It stars JAMES GANDOLFINI as our hero Nick Murder and revolves around the repercussions of his adultery and doomed fascination with the flame haired seductress Tula (KATE WINSLET). For Kitty (SUSAN SARANDON), Nick's long suffering wife, his treachery is the final straw. With faith in her husband shattered she surprises even herself with the ferocity of her anger as she struggles to cope with his betrayal. It is only through a tragic twist of fate that Nick finally understands the extent of the pain he has inflicted on his family. With time running out he discovers the essential value of Kitty's love and respect.

In ROMANCE & CIGARETTES Turturro has crafted a gritty, exhilarating and intense script. He describes the film as a savage musical. "When the characters can no longer express themselves in words, they break into song, lip-synching the tunes that are lodged in their subconscious. It is their way to escape the reality of their world: to dream, to remember, to connect to another human being" says Turturro. The film combines sharp snappy dialogue worthy of David Mamet at his most brilliant with the visual flare and exquisite originality of the Coen Brothers

5.0 out of 5 stars Moulin Rouge for the blue collar slob, 12 Jul 2006
By Mr. Dj Horsfield "Thirdeye" (Yorkshire, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was lucky enough to catch this film on its re-release. Lucky I say as it hardly took the world by storm and screened on one of my five local cinemas for only one week. This by no means did it justice. Perhaps it suffered a crisis of identity, not being as flambouyant and garish as Moulin Rouge, but this was exactly what appealed to me about it. It did appear grimey and rugged but that added to its charm and that atmosphere translated to the characters perfectly. It brought across the rather alternative poetry of the working class suburb and contains many moments that had me in stitches, including one particular scene with Chritopher Walken to rival his best ever work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for your collection, 16 Jul 2006

I'm great fan of the Coen Brothers and specially Big Lebowsky so the expectations were high. Despite the bad critics, Romance & Cigarettes wasn't a disappointment at all. Quite the opposite, I loved it from the moment that Gandolfini kicks off "Lonely as a man without love". Fantastic direction from Turturro. Can't wait to see it again and keep it next to the other masterpieces from the Coen's.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only homage to Dennis Potter worth watching!, 23 April 2006
By Langella (London UK) - See all my reviews
I saw this energetic film in the cinema and instantly clicked with it - I just can't wait for the DVD! This boisterous film is filled with all kinds of pastiches and a cracking cast incuding the indominatible Elaine Stritch - still a powerful screen presence. And why hasn't anyone else thought of teaming up Chrstopher Walken with Susan Sarandon and Gandolfini before?! And as for Kate Winslet!! She's definitely survived the banality/schlock of 'Titanic' and is stronger than ever, especially here with her amazing Northern accent - Jimmy McGovern should get her on his next project! The songs are delivered with gusto and imagination with the routine for 'Delilah' being a particular highlight. And let's not forget the brilliantly sleazey Steve Buscemi - need I say any more? If you can deal with blue collar New Yorkers bursting into song and dance and the bawdiness of Chaucer then this is the film for you! Thanks John Tuturro, for everything!
