Book Description

25 Oct 2001 Classical Foundations
This lively and original guidebook is the first to show students new to the subject exactly what Roman social history involves, and how they can study it for themselves.
After presenting a short history of the development and current position of the discipline, the author discusses the kinds of evidence that can be used, and the full range of resources available. Two case-studies provide practical examples of how to approach sources, and what we can learn from them.
Clear, concise and accessible, with all text extracts translated into English, this is the ideal introduction to an increasingly popular subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A "How To Do It" Guide 27 Dec 2008
Format:Paperback
The writing partnership that is 'Susan Treggiari' both lecture and teach the Social History of the Roman period at college and University levels. They are thus very well placed to advise students (and the rest of us) on the subject. The work is suitably succinct - its intended audience will be far too anxious to get on and 'Do' to spend many hours in reading how to!

The various sections are well designed; I especially liked the section on 'Evidence' with its associated appendix [2] which lists the best available (at the time of writing) collections and translations of all the Primary sources that will help one's study. I still use it as my 'wish list' of books, though I now appear to have most of them in my own collection.

The case studies are beautifully worked examples on what can (and cannot) be learned from the sources, and the final chapter brims with suggestions on how to 'get out there and do it for yourself'.

An entertaining read, as well as a useful first manual on the subject.
