Product Description

This absorbing children s television drama follows four friends Flavia, Nubia, Jonathan and Lupus as they struggle to live through one of history s most turbulent times. With many comparisons to the lives of youngsters today, they deal with issues of prejudice, violence and the environment wrapped up in riveting stories of mystery and suspense. For differing reasons, each of the lead children is seen by Roman society as a misfit, an outsider, which helps strengthen the bond between them. What lies at the heart of each episode, whether they are dealing with erupting volcanoes, assassins or plague, is the strength of their friendship. Based on the million-selling books by Caroline Lawrence, this lavish production stars Simon Callow (Four Weddings And A Funeral, Shakespeare In Love, A Room With A View) as Pliny.

Roman Mysteries is a wonderful set of books and now an equally wonderful television series. The four young detectives are brought together in this series with a few minor changes to the original stories, but all in all very sympathetically, so that readers of the books will not be annoyed by the liberties taken. This is perhaps largely because Caroline Lawrence, the author, was very much involved in the television adaption.

And the series is wonderfully put together. Filmed in fabulous locations, with some first class sets and a talented group of actors - young and old - who really bring this series to life. A few of the more gory details are cleaned up for this adaption, but the adventures are fast paced, full of action and funny moments.

My family are hooked on these. My youngest daughter was still 5 when she started watching it, and my oldest is currently 9 and still loves it (and I expect she would continue loving it for many more years if there were to be more than 2 series, but apparently there are no plans to make a third series, sadly). The historical setting also makes this a highly educational series.

This series gets re-shown periodically on CBBC in the UK, so you may be able to check it out on iplayer. The DVD version is better quality, though, and has all the benefits of you actually owning the media.

I have been very happy with this purchase.

if you read the books and are worried that this will be a superficial rendition or acted by wooden kid actors you'd be wrong. The books are abridged of course to be made into these 30 minute episodes, but each episode is exciting and visually stunning. The children are believable and the moral dilemmas still there and the historical detail still interesting. My children who read and loved the books really enjoy sitting down together with me to watch this series and want to know why there is no series 2!!

My daughter adores the Roman Mysteries books and avidly watched the BBC series when it came out, now she can enjoy them again and again.
Great production and cast. Looking forward to series 2 next.

When the BBC make good children's drama they really do an excellent job. Since we don't live in the UK anymore we are even more aware that most children's tv is cheaply made and doesn't inspire. Roman Mysteries combines beautifully filmed live action adventure with educational content. Our 6 yr old daughter had played the cbbc game and loved it so I was thrilled to see I could buy the series on dvd. She has really enjoyed it and has been able to tell us all sorts of information about Roman lifestyles. Even our 3yr old son was fascinated although a lot of the content is beyond him. I would recommend people living outside the UK buy a multi-system dvd player to watch this and other BBC drama series.

The episodes are exciting and intelligent, and there is plenty of fun too. My son (10 yrs old) and I are really enjoying watching together. Plus there are important topics that we can then discuss together afterwards (slavery, the role of women in society, interaction between kids and parents etc). Great entertainment.

At first, I thought the Roman Mysteries were going to be to layered and complicated for my year 4's. However, I was so wrong. They are enjoying each episode so much, that they beg to watch it everyday. Inspired to write, children are investigating the feelings and actions of Flavia and her friends. I highly recommend this series; especially for older students or higher ability younger students.
