Product Description

Product Description

This book is the concluding part of a rigorous study of the literary, sculptural, pictorial and archaeological evidence for Roman military clothing, covering the last days of the Western Empire and the much longer record of the Eastern, in the 5th to 7th centuries. The evidence from this enormously colourful period - when Germanic and Persian styles, first introduced by mercenaries, were widely adopted by Roman armies - is particularly rich. The text is illustrated with many photographs of rare textile finds, and mosaic artwork; with careful drawings of other figurative sources; and with Graham Sumner's meticulous and dazzling colour reconstructions.

About the Author

Dr Raffaele Amato is an experienced Turin-based researcher of the ancient world. He is an external professor to the Athens University School of Philosophy and Material Culture. He is the author/artist of the first two Roman Military Clothing titles, Men-at-Arms 374 and 390.

Red or White? 27 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Actually whether or not Roman Legionaries wore red or white tunics is the one thing that this book doesn't definitively answer, a summary is apparently planned for the second instalment. That said, this book is a superb investment for both the Wargamer, Military Modeller and Re-enactor. The various sources are accurately and nicely detailed and the pictures themselves are a visual treat. The "Hellenistic" Praetorian Guard of Emperor Nero will hopefully prove an inspiration to figure manufacturers, and this book will enable anyone to do a creditable paint job on them. More than just tunics are covered, with details of cloaks, scarves, and military footwear, all excellently depicted. Overall a "must-buy" for anyone interested in the subject.

A very useful book 3 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
As I have just joined a roman re-enactment group, I've found this book to be very interesting and useful, it has answered a lot of questions I had in my mind about that a Legionary wore and also went some way to clarify what colours the garments were.

I was inspired to buy this book after reading William Napier's trilogy of novels on Atilla the Hun. I wanted to know what the Romans who fought against Atilla in the 5th Century might have looked like.

The wealth of evidence for what soldiers wore from the period-mosaics, frescoes and even surviving clothing-is brough to life in Graham Sumner's vibrant illustrations.

I would thoroughly recommend this book and its companion volumes to anyone with an interest in this tumultunous period of history.
