Product Description

Product Description

This first book in a two-part study offers a fascinating new review of little-known evidence regarding the clothing of the Roman Army, from the late Republic to the end of the early Empire. The author-illustrator draws upon written, pictorial, sculptural and archaeological sources to reconstruct the appearance of the Roman soldier on all those occasions when he was not concealed by armour - that is, on most days throughout his career. This detailed account by an expert in his field, is accompanied by numerous illustrations and eight full colour plates.

About the Author

Graham Sumner was born in 1958. He studied illustration at Wrexham Art School and has specialised in archaeological reconstruction drawings. Graham has been involved with the Ermine Street Guard for nearly 20 years. He has written a number of articles on the Roman Army for Military Illustrated magazine and was the author of the popular Roman Army: Wars of the Empire in Brasseys' History of Uniform series. This is his first book for Osprey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red or White?, 27 Aug 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Roman Military Clothing: 100 BC - AD 200 Vol 1 (Men-at-arms) (Paperback)
Actually whether or not Roman Legionaries wore red or white tunics is the one thing that this book doesn't definitively answer, a summary is apparently planned for the second instalment. That said, this book is a superb investment for both the Wargamer, Military Modeller and Re-enactor. The various sources are accurately and nicely detailed and the pictures themselves are a visual treat. The "Hellenistic" Praetorian Guard of Emperor Nero will hopefully prove an inspiration to figure manufacturers, and this book will enable anyone to do a creditable paint job on them. More than just tunics are covered, with details of cloaks, scarves, and military footwear, all excellently depicted. Overall a "must-buy" for anyone interested in the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very useful book, 3 Oct 2011
This review is from: Roman Military Clothing: 100 BC - AD 200 Vol 1 (Men-at-arms) (Paperback)
As I have just joined a roman re-enactment group, I've found this book to be very interesting and useful, it has answered a lot of questions I had in my mind about that a Legionary wore and also went some way to clarify what colours the garments were.

4.0 out of 5 stars Roman Military Clothing AD 400-640, 23 Mar 2009

I was inspired to buy this book after reading William Napier's trilogy of novels on Atilla the Hun. I wanted to know what the Romans who fought against Atilla in the 5th Century might have looked like.

The wealth of evidence for what soldiers wore from the period-mosaics, frescoes and even surviving clothing-is brough to life in Graham Sumner's vibrant illustrations.

I would thoroughly recommend this book and its companion volumes to anyone with an interest in this tumultunous period of history.
