Product Description

Product Description

Graham Webster gives background on Britain before the invasion and goes on to describe the Roman forces, the personalities involved, the actual invasion and Claudius' triumphal entrance into Camulodunum, the British capital.

From the Back Cover

The Roman conquest of Britain in AD43 was one of the most important turning points in the history of the British Isles. It left a legacy still discernible today in the form of archaeological remains, road networks, land divisions and even language. In his much acclaimed trilogy, now up-dated and revised, Dr Webster builds up a fascinating and lively picture of Britain in the first century AD and discusses in detail the various types of evidence and the theories based upon them.
Graham Webster gives the background of Britain before the invasion and goes on to describe the Roman forces, the personalities involved, the actual invasion - the crucial battle on the Meday - and Claudius's triumphal entrance into Camulodunum, the British captial.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good on historical detail, but you don't feel you were there, 3 Sep 2001
This is the first of Graham Websters' trilogy and if you buy it seeking anything other than a scholarly detailed and painstaking assembly of the available historical and archiological evidence, then you may never get to the next two in the series. It covers the invasion (the 20th century military would dub it a "reconnaisance-in-strength") by Julius Caesar but the main thrust of the book is the 1st century invasion by Claudius - the first of only two successful organised invasions of the British Isles. The Roman texts covering the invasion are picked over in detail (thankfully not in the original Latin)and correlations between the events described and the available archaeological evidence are drawn. The Author is careful to point out where his educated guesswork begins and ends. A large part of the book is given over to coins (an important part of the evidence allowing historians to identify and place British tribes on the map), and later finds at individual sites are discussed and often illustrated in detail. The photographs deal mainly with archaeological artefacts - one yearns for a few landscape shots of the presumed battlefields described. The few maps require earnest study and do not reward the casual reader. This is an archaeologist's book probably intended for fellow archaeologists. It gives one a marvellous insight into how little evidence there is about what happened twenty centuries ago, and how what little there is is used. It is perhaps unfair to complain that there is relatively little colour and feel for the times. After all, if one wished for that there are always novels....
