Graham Webster (1913-2001) was both don and archaeologist, and a giant in the subject of the Roman army. Why on earth his very significant work listed here was not already adorned with stars and reviews goodness knows !

My edition of this book is the second - of 1979 - and a very substantial and nicely produced hardback of about 330 pages. Its chapters cover not just the army in the field, but camps, forts, frontiers. The work also touches on the influence of the military on other spheres: a critical point about Roman civilization in general. There is a good block of B&W photos, and quite a number of line drawings.

The only thing to look out for is that research and discoveries have continued apace - and therefore it would be wise to supplement Webster with other works that have appeared more recently. Otherwise magnificent !
