As one would expect a professional piece of work written in an easy and understandable style.

Covers most aspects of Roman (marching)camps, primarily those in Britain, as you would expect from the title but, reference is made to those in other parts of the empire as appropriate. Has separate chapters on historical sources, layout and holding capacity as well as what is a Roman camp, re-use and survival, form : defences, gates and annexes as well as distribution, chronology and context. If you are interested in Roman camps then I think you'll find that much of the information currently available on them is contained in this book.

The book is paperback, some 9 1/2" by 6 3/4" (24.5 cm x 17cm) with 160 pages, lots of line drawings as well as B&W, and colour photographs. If there is an issue it is with the B&W photographs (mostly taken from the air) where because of the quality of the reproduction it is not always easy to identify the 'ramparts' of the camps in the photo. It would have been helpful if white arrows or some such had been used to identify them. This has been done in a couple of occasions and it made life so much easier for old eyes.

Overall a fine companion book to Johnson's "Roman Forts" and Kennedy and Riley's "Rome's Desert Frontier".
