I'm a teacher of Y3 and 4 children and read this book as part of our topic about the Romans. They really enjoyed it and followed Davey's exploits with interest. They have since borrowed the book and read it at home. We also read Across the Roman Wall by Theresa Breslin and Gladiators Never Blink by Nick Warburton.I think their favourite was Gillian Cross. All the books I purchased through Amazon.

The Roman Beanfeast 16 Oct 2003

What a terrific book! Very entertaining story, and pertinent to my 8 year old's sons school topic covering Romans. My son is a slow reader and this book really held his interest and increased his comprehension abilities. The choice and range of diction is just right, some new words well placed so that comprehension was easy. Just simply a great book and I think for my son, a pivotal one for his being able to both understand and enjoy reading a whole book on his own.

The Roman Beanfeast

David, is a 10-year-old boy who has a mad ambition to build an invention and win the class contest. After visiting a Roman museum and looking at all the exhibitions. David decides to enter the class contest. He will have to work hard! Molly his closest rival also wants to win badly and she will try and beat him at any cost! She will break his inventions not give him information or even hurt him. After a lot of trouble he finally makes a last minute invention and with a little help from his mum, he takes it into school. Will it be enough to win or not?

A very exciting and hilarious book that you would not want to miss. A 5 star rating book that will surely knock the socks off you. A book for all ages.

This book is written by Gillian Cross who has won the Carnnegie award for Wolf, she has also won both the Smarties award and the Whitbread award for The Great Elephant Chase. Her hobbies are orienteering and playing the piano.
