This review is from: Roly-poly Rice Ball (Hopscotch) (Paperback)
from the HOPSCOTCH book series.

From the back cover:-

'Roly-poly rice ball, roly-poly rice ball,
Roly-poly rice ball, roll right in!
As Li sits down to eat the last of his rice balls, he hears a strange song.
Then his lunch rolls away - and the biggest adventure of his life begins...'

32 high quality shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Numbered pages with clear, easy-to-follow text.
Beautifully illustrated throughout, this delightful book is further enhanced by relevant facial expressions and a rhyming element.

Example of text:-

'All morning, Li swept up the path clean for the rich people to walk on.
Then Li sat under the cherry tree and un-folded his lunch-cloth.
There lay three rice balls, as white and as round as three tiny moons.
Li sighed. His rice box at home was now empty.
What would he eat for supper tonight?'

When little voices sing, the rice balls roll towards the cherry tree and disappear, one by one......the hungry Li follows behind them..... and an adventure begins....with a most satisfactory ending!

`HOPSCOTCH has been specially designed to fit the requirements of the National Literacy Strategy. It offers real books by top authors and illustrators for children developing their reading skills.'

There are a number of `HOPSCOTCH' stories to choose from and these are listed on the very last page.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another version of The Roly Rice Balls, 11 Oct 2007
By
I borrowed this book from library for my daughter, and my little one loves it. In this version, Lee is a poor young man, and the story is a little bit different from another version of roly poly rice ball.

Japanese folklore contains many stories about kind people who live next door to mean people. The theme of another version rice ball story is a poor but kind old man follows three rice balls as they roll into a hole. The rice balls lead him to a tiny land under the earth which is inhabited by millions of mice. The mice give the man a magical golden rice-pounding mallet to thank him for sharing his rice balls with them. From that day on, the mallet provides food for the man. His greedy neighbour, however, trys to trick the mice into giving him a mallet, and ends up with mud, slime, slugs, and other "horrid things!"

EDUCATIONAL NOTES: This script comes from a Japanese folklore rich in stories about kind old men living next door to mean old men.

The familiar motif: "dropped ball (basket) leads to adventure when recovery is attempted" has been used throughout the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Roly-Poly Rice Ball, 11 Oct 2008
By Mdm Zee - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Roly-Poly Rice Ball (Read-It! Readers: Green Level) (Library Binding)
[...]

The story is set in ancient China, gleaned from the colorful illustration of cherry blossom trees, ladies, men and mice dressed in ancient Chinese robes, and tells of a poor sweeper, Li, who had only three rice balls left to last him the whole day. Magically, as he sat under a cherry tree to eat it, the rice balls rolled away into a hole under the tree. Even more magical is his experience as he rolls into the hole as well. The mice who live in the hole eats his rice balls. But Li never gets upset even though he was ravenous. In return, the emperor mice rewards him with precious items which to the mice are of little value.

Anyway, it is an easy read and one that will encourage the younger readers to enjoy reading because of the repetitive words as well as the sing-song magical chant that the mice uses to make things roll in and out of the hole. The clear and colorful illustration makes reading and guessing words more fun!
