Product Description

BBC Review

It’s always been pretty difficult to dislike The Go! Team and their uplifting jacked-on-E-numbers brand of boisterous playground vocals, busy handclaps and infectious sunshine optimism. It’d be like hating a school play for the unconvincing acting, or not cracking a smile at a winning Only Fools and Horses joke you’ve seen and heard several times before.

There’s an inherently inoffensive quality to Ian Parton and his merry band of cohorts, but The Go! Team have always offered more than just good clean fun. Their crashing of pop, hip hop and freestyling into animated three-minute snippets on 2004’s debut album Thunder, Lightning, Strike produced a refreshingly dynamic brand of pop that couldn’t help but capture the imagination. And on Rolling Blackouts it’s much the same formula at work.

The bombastic Beastie Boys-tinged opener T.O.R.N.A.D.O. instantly reacquaints the listener with Ninja’s bratty vocal delivery and sets a bold tone for the following 30 minutes. Part maverick brass band creations, and part energetic show-tunes, Rolling Blackouts is, as expected, an album that’s difficult to pin down but somehow a little predictable.

There’s daring and drive; energy and a restlessness that makes you feel guilty for even contemplating to take a breath. But we know the components, and have learned the formula, it’s evident we’ve heard this before. The Go! Team’s giddy eclecticism has always been one of their main draws, but as the album bounces from Ready to Go Steady’s lovely shades of 60s pop to the horn crashes of Bust-Out Brigade, via the sweet, albeit idle, melody of Super Triangle, little triggers are flicking at déjà vu switches.

Categorically, Rolling Blackouts isn’t a simple case of re-hashing their past success, but there’s a fine line between the predictable and the familiar. There’s still the charm and energy and all the qualities that made us fall in love with The Go! Team in the first place. But it’s like a child who’s recently learned one song: cute the first few times, but even the most lovable things eventually get tiresome.

The Go! Team's third album is more of the same yet better structured and produced, the songs seem tighter yet without losing their loose, thrown-together sound and this is no bad thing. Opening with the crunching T.O.R.N.A.D.O you know you're in for a wild ride. There are the usual cutesy numbers such as The Secretary song and Ready To Go Steady, as well as the excellent instrumentals - Yosemite Theme being the stand out track here, it could have been written as the theme music for an epic Western. Then there are the rest of the songs, insanely catchy pop songs like Buy Nothing Day, Apollo Throwdown, Rolling blackouts, Back Like 8 Track. The band is currently on tour in the UK and we caught them last Sunday in Liverpool and what a live show they put on, the sound quality is better than the album! Sam and Jamie jump around like mentalists pumping out their killer riffs and basslines, Ian playing his harmonica like there was no tomorrow in Yosemite theme, Kai keeping it all together with her precise drumming, Kaori just seeming to enjoy herself getting to play all those different instruments, and Ninja, what can you say this whirling, dancing singing machine? Full of attitude yet making the crowd love her with her easy banter between songs. My wife hasn't really been a Go! Team fan, saying that the songs are cross between tracks from Sesame Street, The Banana Splits and the Brady Bunch, she's converted now though, that 70's TV sound is what makes the Go Team tick. See them live AND buy the album if only for one reason - we had a great view of the stage and it's obvious that Ian needs the cash to buy some new trainers!

More of the same and who cares?...it's top notch. If you like the first two you'll like this. 'Nuff said.

Rolling Good Fun!!! 16 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD
Got the first album on the strength of Ladyflash and fell in love with the whole album. Subsequently got the second album, which was good but not as good as the first.

I thought my Go! Team days would end there, but on sampling a few tracks of Rolling Blackouts and then taking the plunge I'm happy to report that I'm blissfully happy!!

Loads of rollicking good time rock, pop, funk and good vibes just oozes from this album.

Do yourself a favour, put down you Mumford, Muse, XX, etc and have some fun!!
