Biography

Biographyby William Ruhlmann

The Bay City Rollers were a Scottish pop/rock band of the '70s with a strong following among teenage girls. The origins of the group go back to the formation of the duo the Longmuir Brothers in the late '60s, consisting of drummer Derek Longmuir (b. March 19, 1952, Edinburgh, Scotland) and his bass-playing brother Alan (b. June 20, 1953, Edinburgh). They eventually… Read more in Amazon's Bay City Rollers Store

I was 14 years old when I begged my mother to buy me this album, and I played it over and over. I'm so glad this is finally on CD and with bonus B-Sides. As soon as I put this in the CD player it took me back to a very happy time. The Rollers in 1974 provided excellant pop music, nothing more nothing less and this contains all their early hits, 'Remember', 'Shang-A-Lang', Summerlove Sensation' and the US number 1 'Saturday Night'. Every home should have a copy of this.

...and it really was a huge seller! The Rollers would make technically better albums over the next few years but none had the charm and runaway success of 'Rollin'. It featured 3 top 10 hits, all classics even today, and was just one of those 'right moment/right time' albums.

I doubt there weren't many young girls who hadn't ruthlessly scrutinized the lovely gatefold sleeve whilst playing the album to death. Quite a few boys too, would they admit it! That's if you managed to get a good copy, that is. Bell records (later to become Arista) had alarming manufacturing problems in the 70's, rendering much of their vinyl output unplayable.

Still, that's all in the past and the CD sounds great. It's one of those albums that even if you haven't heard it since the mid-70's, you will remember every word, trust me. There are also 4 bonus tracks, all B sides to the singles. None will rock your world, but it is a nice touch. The booklet is good, though the writer's tone is a little snotty, and all in all it's a great package. Cheap, too.

1975 would bring the BCR's biggest worldwide hit in 'Bye Bye Baby', but the album it came from, the beautifully packaged 'Once Upon A Star', didn't have the longevity of 'Rollin' on the charts. The next 3 albums were all good, in fact 'Wouldn't You Like It' is one of my personal favourites, but 'Rollin' was the album that everyone would remember.

If you really are a Rollers' enthusiast, check out the 2008 Japanese reissues which feature the original mini LP sleeves (gorgeous!) and superb sound, though in some cases they omit the bonus tracks, for some reason. For everyone else, though, these CDs will do fine. Remember to close the windows if you turn the volume up!

Wow, this album takes me back so many years. To the day I used to dress in the same gear as the Rollers (what a bird puller that was).
The extra tracks make this an album to have in your collection just for the nostalgia value alone. I am a solo tribute to the Rollers and just love singing the songs on this album to all my Bay City Roller fans everywhere. I am now going to spread the word that this album is now available on CD on Amazon.
