Biography

Roller Trio is James Mainwaring, saxophone & electronics; Luke Wynter, guitar and Luke Reddin-Williams, drums. Still only in their mid-twenties they shot to fame in 2012, propelled out of Leeds by a series of raucous, high octane gigs, including a swaggering set for BBC Introducing in Manchester, that had the critics raving about their visceral stew of thrashy riffs, tricksy time ... Product Description

Product Description

Described as the 'new sound of uk Jazz, by Gilles Peterson Roller Trio is the latest band to explode out of the fertile Leeds music scene where experimental jazz rubs shoulders with DIY alt rock and electronica. Their music is a fresh, visceral stew of conventional and experimental sounds that features stonking riffs, thrashy noise, evocative songs and electronic soundscapes. Incubated in mammoth improvisation sessions and honed in local gigs, their music is delivered with a captivating swagger and greedy energy that is utterly beguiling and packs a hook-laden punch.

Review

'Dark, menacing, bass-heavy - the new sound of UK jazzzzzzz.' --Gilles Peterson, BBC6 Music

'Sidesteps every pigeonhole, mingling Rock beats, Indian flavoured harmonies and film noir paciness…. A gleeful pleasure.' --Daily Telegraph ****

'Roaring out of Leeds comes this young jazz-rock combo putting real zip into the genre. Their effervescent album clearly caught the ear of important UK music taste-makers, as this is the token jazz album to get a 2012 Mercury Prize nomination.
The album ebbs and flows with a free, improvised feel with each member of the talented threesome edging into the spotlight. Over 58 minutes, James Mainwaring (saxophone), Luke Wynter (guitar) and Luke Reddin-Williams (drums) provide a formidable sonic assault on the senses.
Not everyone's cup of tea, maybe, but you just have to Roller with it.' --The Sun

'Quirky, individual, there's surely an audience waiting for the Rollers way beyond the the jazz cellars.' --Mojo * * *

If you like Acoustic Ladyland or Polar Bear you will probably like this. Some pretty chunky pyrotechnics on the sax. Great melodies and some very muscular soloing. As a trio it presents a very open sound with some sparce comping on the guitar which also seems to be playing the bass lines. Very groove based music, which I am into.

Lovely tunes, great for chilling out to. In my opinion this album should have won the Mercury award. Alt J are good but Roller trio are reinventing Jazz for a new generation and that desreves to be rewarded. Only downside is that the album doesn't include any information on the songs apart from the titles, it doesn't even state the song's time duration.

Absolutely awesome album, great fresh Jazz tones by the 2011 Peter Whittingham Award winning band, absolutely love the quality of this album with some awe inspiring moments! Heard them on Radio 3! Great band live and all that energy really caught on this album. Ignore at your peril!
