He sings soul music, 1960s style with a voice that would match the quality of stars like Wilson Pickett. He wails and screams, he shouts and whispers. And he also plays guitar and keyboards. Plus he's writing 90 per cent of the songs. If you are into 1960s soul, you MUST check him out. As I said before, he's a phenomenon. I have to disagree wholeheartedly with some of the other reviews on here, unlike a lot of the new wave 'soul' acts seemingly sprouting from every corner of the world so far this year, Eli Reed seems to have got it right. Rather than sounding like he's only doing a soul record because his record company thought it might be a good idea, he seems to have a genuine love of the genre and the treatment is absolutely classic 60's soul.
Had he been around about 40 years ago he would not have found himself out of place on the Stax label next to Otis, Sam and Dave, Wilson Picket etc. Yes - his voice and the overall sound isn't anything ground breaking, but the paperboy can definitely deliver (you see what I did there?), he growls, howls and yelps with the best of them...and the brass section is phenomenal!
I've been predicting a 'proper soul' come back for some years now, and at last here's a fellah who might just pull it off. If you like your music funky, bursting with passion and with more than a little authenticity then buy this record! Please do it now!
Personally - I'll also be keeping an ear out for any live shows this side of the pond, I've got a feeling they're going to be something pretty special!

No matter how much I write, ELI is my new heroe, it sounds cheesy but if you like great music he will be yours too. And I warn you, the sound of this record CAN blow you in pieces. It mixes good old melody, funk and soul... makes you feel you are 30 or 40 years ago, today.
I put on this record with a couple of friends and not a single person left without asking who this guy was, people were dancing and enjoying themselves and all thanks to the great ELI. It is the sound Motown today, this guy will reborn this genre for male artists.

Funkin' good music that sparkles from the opening track to the last. If you have a hankering for soul and blues you should check out this album. The classic combination of horns and twangy guitar will have your foot tapping out the rythm. I'm sold.

A bit more hype surrounding this offering and I'm afraid its not justified. It's good, but not great and after a few listens you get fed up with it.

"Paperboy" doesn't deliver
At first listen one could be forgiven for thinking this is a 1960s Memphis blues band, newly recorded onto CD. Even the bold retro packaging design harks back to an earlier time. Read more
