Steve Winwood - Revolutions

Biography

Winwood was just a teenager when he rocketed into the international spotlight as the prodigious singer of the Spencer Davis Group (which also featured his brother Muff on bass). The blues and R&B-influenced rock of “Gimme Some Lovin’” and “I’m a Man” stood among the leading hits at the peak of the British Invasion, Winwood’s singing drawing ... Released two years after the excellent and deservedly very successful 'Back in the high life', 'Roll with it' sees Steve Winwood moving back more towards his roots, and returning to a somewhat more traditional rhythm and blues sound. Rather than complex synthesizer and percussion arrangements, 'Roll with it' is dominated by piano and organ, with punchy horns from the famed American trumpet/sax duo the Memphis Horns, and the drums of John Robinson well to the fore. The use of these natural rhythm section instruments gives the album a somewhat more organic and flowing feel than its predecessor. The powerful production sound of Tom Lord Alge has evolved significantly and gives the record a very bright and urgent quality, and even the cover, showing a mature Winwood looking self-assured in jeans and leather jacket, hints at the tough and uncompromising R&B style of the record. Whilst two tracks ('Dancing shoes 'and 'Shining song') are not so memorable, the rest are excellent, my particular favourites being the gospelly ballads 'One more morning' and 'The morning side', and the driving title track.

I used to listen to this about 25 years ago on cassette. It died and I forgot about this album. I bought it wondering if it was really as good as I remember.

Yes it is. This is a truly great album - groove, lyrics, melodies, awesome musicianship are all there in spades. Not a dud track.

This is a treat for your ears.

I bought this on casette when it was first released and never got around to buying the CD. Big mistake. I've rectified that now, mind.
The album is a mix of storming R&B tracks, mid-tempo gems and sublime ballads.
The crime here is that it was not anywhere near a big an album as it was in the States, where it was a monster.
Great, great, great.

Steve Winwood has passed through many phases during his career. This may be smoother and more polished than some of his other output, but it still packs an emotional punch. With several classics on the CD this was a welcome addition to my collection.
