Amazon.co.uk Review

Having outgrown their Stray Cats and Green Day phases, for Roll On the Living End join forces with Midnight Oil and Silverchair producer Nick Launay for an album that firmly establishes them as Australia's Great Rock Hope. Like late, great power-pop revivalists Material Issue (to whom the chorus of "Dirty Man" bears a more than passing resemblance), this Melbourne power trio fully justifies their plundering of past musical forms thanks to enthusiasm, chops and songwriting talent. From the fist-in-the-air populism of its title track to the anthemic "Silent Victory" (which Launay gives the full Midnight Oil treatment), Roll On signals the Living End's readiness for an international pop overthrow. --Bill Forman

To compare this to the self-titled album from '98 is to miss the point completely, while THAT album was very much a punk one, THIS album is more of a classic rock album, true, there are a couple of tracks that sound like they could have been taken off the debut, but this record proves the 3-piece are more talented than other bands out there by mixing just about every kind of musical style and tempo that you can think of into their songs. Its certainly a much more varied album and from the opening track its seems like its an unstoppable juggernaut of a record with Chris Cheney's almost unpredicable approach to the guitar and brilliant song-writing sealing the deal, unfortunatly, a few of the later tracks on the album, while good, don't measure up to the sky-scraper standards of songs like "Pictures In The Mirror" or "Roll On" itself, but final track, "Uncle Harry" more than makes up for it. If you like your classic rock with a punked up edge, or indeed, if you liked The Living End's previous releases, you'll love this just as much.

Album Highlights:- "Riot On Broadway", "Carry Me Home", "Blood On Your Hands" and "Uncle Harry"

Interesting how I discovered this band - through Aussie country singer - Kasey Chambers. The Living End played with her in her song, "Crossfire", which I adore so much that I thought I'd better check out the band. The first song I listened to was 'Dirty Man'. What a great, catchy tune. This, I'm sure would do extremely well in the UK as it has that pop edge which could make it a really big-seller. Most of the other songs on the album are so nostalgic for me. Particularly in 'Uncle Harry', I can really feel the atmosphere of a real pogo-ing British punk concert, which sadly now, cease to exist. There's that raw rebellion of youth, so reminiscent of music 30 years ago. Other bands have tried to recapture the fun atmosphere of the punk era, yet not one has really clinched it. Until these guys that is, and you know what? It's even BETTER than it was then. Fresher too, but in honest comparison I'd say better.

I stumbled across this band by accident after it was recommended to me by a mate who I subsequently found out had never ever heard them before.... But I don't care, because I found this album to be very much a breath a fresh air if you are a bit fed up with all the punk-rock, alt-rock offerings from the states. From the superb opening title track you find yourself smiling and shouting along with them when the consistently addictive choruses kick in. Occasionaly lapsing into the more old-style punk tracks only provides to make the album more diverse when listening to it all the way through. Really, it's a true gem if you are into this style of music, I only hope word spreads!!
