Very inspiring ! - not very little steps on how to.... but indeed very inspiring and shows very different techniques - Bought both in the series - I would buy a third DVD if a such existed ! - I you must choose one of two, I'd pick no.1

3.0 out of 5 stars Rolf Harris-Star Portraits-Series 1 3 Oct 2010

I was slightly disappointed with this DVD on the one hand. The DVD was very entertaining, in the sense that it did showcase, to a high degree, talented portrait artists' impressions of celebrities ranging from Michael Parkinson to Meera Syal. However, on the other hand, it had one major flaw.

This flaw was present throughout the entire DVD and can be identified as follows. The presenter, in this case Rolf Harris, was in my opinion too pre-occupied with the 'celebrities'. Harris would ask many searching questions, for example how did they start in show business etc; and as you might well imagine this line of questioning would take up almost two-thirds of each episode. Consequently all this came at the expense of the various artists' who were pushed to one side. A perfect example of this was that all artists' were briefly seen at the beginning of each episode. There was a fleeting glimpse of them at work in their studios. Then finally, we saw them toward the end where they would reveal their portraits. Although there had been no discussion on techniques used or what methods they used to complete their paintings.

4.0 out of 5 stars like watching an old friend 31 Aug 2011
By lizt
I watched this series when it was on tv and thoroughly enjoyed it. This video was very reasonably priced and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching it. It's informative as well as entertaining. The different artists offer a huge variety of approaches towards portraiture. Rolf presents the programme very well and the subjects are well known - no celebrities for the sake of celebrity here such as obscure people who've done nothing other than promote themselves. I felt you got an insight into people such as David Dickinson and Meera Syal that I've never seen in other programmes. Good dvd that's kept me entertained for a number of evenings and which I anticipate I will watch periodically from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD 5 Jun 2011

Fantastic DVD, very interesting and brilliant to see a range of artists at work and the different ways they interpret the subject. I have also shown some of the programmes to my class in school and they also love to see the different artists at work. I am a huge fan of Rolf Harris and once again he presents the programmes perfectly. I would highly recommend this DVD and also Series 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars wkd rolf 11 Jun 2009
this is not an how too paint dvd, its all about other artists from all walks of life. some working as pros and others just like me self taught.
( the self taught artists seam too be the better ones )
its a really good series and you will want too collect all the other dvds.
however, how some people preceive art is beyond me, and after watching the very first episode, i was shocked at which painting was picked and deemed too be the best... shocking is all i can say on that.
well worth buying this dvd though, second series a little pricey i thought, but if you want something your gonna buy it anyway.
