Raunchy, but not nauseating, Role Models is an exceptionally funny slacker comedy co-written by Paul Rudd. Rudd stars as Danny, one-half of a team (along with Seann William Scott's character, Wheeler) that visits schools on behalf of a power-drink company. With his lack of enthusiasm for work and his life painfully evident, Danny loses his live-in girlfriend, Beth (Elizabeth Banks), and soon has a run-in with the law resulting in community service for him and Wheeler. Ordered to appear at a Big Brothers-like organisation, Danny is partnered with a lonely if brilliant adolescent boy, Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), while Wheeler is hooked up with a foul-mouthed pre-teen named Ronnie (Bobb'e J. Thompson). Neither of the men has anything in common with their charges, a fact exacerbated when Danny reluctantly attends Augie's participation in a weekend role-playing fantasy game with a medieval flavour. Meanwhile, Wheeler just tries to survive his ongoing power struggle with Ronnie. Both sets of relationships improve when Danny and Wheeler begin to meet their kids halfway and even learn to empathise with them, though the results are sometimes comically bumpy before the characters all hit their groove. There are a number of hilarious scenes (the film definitely deserves its R rating) and more than a few thoughtful ones, including a terrific moment where Danny defends Augie to the latter's critical parents over an awkward dinner. Jane Lynch is very funny as a semi-insane director of the program pairing kids and adults, and Banks (W.) is very appealing as Danny's unhappy ex-girlfriend. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, and heartfelt 23 April 2009
By Scott
Role Models is a really funny film. Stiffler and McLovin in the same flick! What makes the film work, aside from the slapstick laughs is that at its core it has genuine heart. The viewer can genuinely warm to the characters who are all outsiders in their own different ways.
The last twenty minutes or so when the cast are dressed as fighting fantasy characters doing battle in a live action gameplay scenario is side-splittingly funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suck it Reindeer Games! 20 Oct 2012
By Spike Owen TOP 500 REVIEWER
Role Models is directed by David Wain who also collectively writes the screenplay with Timothy Dowling, Paul Rudd and Ken Marino. It stars Paul Rudd, Sean William Scott, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Bobbi'e J. Thompson, Elizabeth Banks and Jane Lynch. Music is by Craig Wedren and cinematography by Russ T. Alsobrook.

Two energy drink salesmen (Rudd and Scott) are ordered to perform 150 hours of community service as punishment for an offence that occurred when their company vehicle was about to be towed. For their service, the two men work at a program called Sturdy Wings that is designed to pair kids with adult role models.

Personally I avoided it until now because it just sounded like another lame American bawdy comedy about two slacker dudes who create chaos and then grow up by the end credits. This in spite of the fact that I rate Rudd highly and have often found Scott watchable in small doses. As it happens, the film follows the standard formula of plotting but rises above it with funny dialogue, a commitment to its characters and an avoidance of the sort of treacle thick sentimentality that is out of place in this type of comedy. It's also expertly performed by the cast, with the youngsters doing their shift admirably.

Yep, there's adherence to poignancy and type, while the odd scene just comes off as being too smug and clever. But there's so much fun to be had here it doesn't hurt the film, it's a true pick me up if you are feeling down, a splendid case of a cast finding chemistry across the board and delivering on the promise of the zippy script. 8/10

When I first sat down to watch this I was expecting another puerile American teen coming of age comedy that has the film snob in me snorting in disgust. In many respects that's exactly what it is, but this is a superior entry into the genre that is highly amusing and nowhere near as toe-curlingly cringingly embarrassing as I usually find such movies.

All the usual clichés are present and correct. Two buddies in their thirties, one strait-laced, the other a bit of a lad, go off the rails with disastrous results. Mr up tight loses long term girlfriend. Both go on a journey of self discovery to loosen up and recover girlfriend (mr up-tight) and grow up a bit (jack the lad). Redemption is found after many hilarious adventures. In this one redemption is found through the mentoring of two difficult children.

So far so meh. But there is something that sets this film apart. And that is that it is actually very imaginative. The redemptive grand finale is a superb effort from the film makers, with a very imaginative set up that is extremely well realised. And all the actors involved are pretty good at what they do, especially the two difficult kids, who really steal the show. The only weak link is Jane Lynch in a misjudged performance as an ex junky turned social worker that I found totally unfunny.

In all 4 stars for a great hour and a half's entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 17 Feb 2011

This is a brilliantly funny film in the same vein of Knocked Up and Superbad.

Basically Sean William-Scott and Paul Rudd are co-workers and upon Rudd's wife leaving him he loses the plot and whilst at work gets both himself and his co-worker in trouble with the police. As punishment they get to be role models to a total nerd (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and a young Stiffler in the making.

This is hilariously funny with excellent writing, acting and cast. I loved the Whispering Eye reference it was so funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! 9 Dec 2008
Me and my boyfriend were visiting New york and we decided to go to the cinema, as we were told the seats were amazing! We hadn't heard of anything that was out over there and it was just pot luck we picked Role Models as we both thought Paul Rudd and Sean william Scott were ok.
I can tell you i am so pleased we chose that film! it was sooo funny, there was not one bit that didn't get the audience howling!! i loved it, i can't wait till it comes out over here. The kids that are in it have such different characters but are equally hilarious! They both did really well! Now me and my boyfriend love Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott! It is truley the best comedy i have EVER seen!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars poor quality 16 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This rating is for the DVD Not the content. When it says digitally remastered on the front you might think it comes from the original master tapes. Not this one ,It seems to come from VHS Tapes and then transferred onto DVD badly. I would say nothing digital has ever been near this product .It was also quite expensive. So rip off yes avoid yes .
