No-fuss interface for latency-free recording on Macs, PCs & iPads

When it comes to computer-based recording, everybody sweats the big stuff: the guitars, the hard drives and the software. But if you’re wondering why the process is giving you such a headache, maybe it’s because you’ve neglected the small stuff – like a top-quality interface. Roland’s UM-One Mk2 is a no-fuss MIDI interface that gives modern musicians a compact and simple way to connect electronic music gear to their computers. For flexibility, it’s compatible with Macs, PCs and iPads, and for convenience, bus-powered USB operation means it doesn’t need batteries. The best news? If you’ve had the frustration of hearing a split-second delay in your headphones as you record – otherwise known as latency – the UM-One Mk2 will transform your experience with high-performance data processing that ensures ultra-tight tracking.

A no-fuss interface that banishes latency

Standard sound cards and inferior audio interfaces can suck the joy from computer production by causing infuriating delays in data transfer. Unlike those, the UM-One Mk2 features Fast Processing Technology (FPT), meaning that MIDI data is transferred at rapid speed and high-resolution. The upshot is that your recordings are seamlessly captured as you play them, with no delays, jitters or skipping of triggers.

Works with Macs, PCs and tablets

Let’s say you create your music on a Mac at home and a PC laptop on the move. No problem: the UM-One Mk2 is compatible with both operating systems. Even your iPad is welcome at the party, hooking up via the Apple Camera Connection Kit and allowing you, for example, to use your electronic V-Drums kit with your Garage Band app.

Won’t disrupt your recording sessions

When inspiration strikes, you don’t want a fiddly interface breaking your flow. The UM-One Mk2 couldn’t be simpler. It connects your musical e-gear to your chosen computer via simple one-in/one-out MIDI cables, has helpful twin data indicator LEDs and features USB bus-powered operation that means you’ll never have sessions interrupted by a hunt for batteries.

This device was purchased to replace a 'budget' USB-MIDI device, to connect my HD-1 drums to a MacBook. The previous device had been skipping way too many triggers, but the Roland UM-ONE is perfect, no more issues. Very handy tablet feature too, means I can connect my drums to my iPad's GarageBand for convenience.

Expensive compared to other seemingly-equivalent options, but works perfectly (unlike the seemingly-equivalent option that I tried before it). This was the only MIDI interface that I could find (of this type) which was advertised as supported under Windows 8.1 (including x64), and after installing Roland's drivers it does indeed work perfectly on this platform.

Whilst quite expensive, this is the real deal. It functions as midi should function. I use a vast array of midi hardware/software and have just updated to Windows 8.1 ...this just compliments it all. Do download the driver for your operating system first, the supplied CD isn't up to date (at least mine wasn't) Extremely satisfied with this product.

It installed easily, and works as a simple, reliable and fast MIDI interface. No complaints, here, and seems to give a better response than the built-in USB MIDI output of my keyboard.

I bought this just to reload the factory default patches on my Korg M1. Unbeknown to me all of the patches in my 23 year old keyboard were kept alive by a CR2032 battery which had long since died. So in addition to replacing the battery I needed a way to transfer the patches from my PC to the M1. There are some radically cheaper versions of this sort of thing but many of the reviews indicated problems with SysEx messages. I do find it annoying that this unit costs so much more than the cheaper versions which can be had for £5 in some cases (hence 4 stars). Having said that I had my keyboard up and running again in minutes. Apart from the cost I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

We made the mistake of buying a cheaper alternative lead (one like this - http://amzn.to/1EM58JN) to run MIDI MSC commands to a lighting desk for a local theatre group. After a couple of weeks of trying to work out what the issue was we replaced the lead with one of these and we are no longer having issues!

A bit of a faff to load the Roland drivers on a Windows 8 pc from the enclosed CD so we downloaded the latest drivers from their website and they installed perfectly first time round. The lead was operational in minutes and is working perfectly.

I used one of these interfaces to update the firmware on two Strymon effects devices and there were no difficulties.
Just note that the plugs are labelled 'Connect to MIDI OUT' and 'Connect to MIDI IN' otherwise you'll get very confused for a while.
