Product Description

Product Description

Half a century after his death, Lt Col. Robert Blair Mayne is still regarded as one of the greatest soldiers in the history of military special operations. He was the most decorated British soldier of the Second World War, receiving four DSOs, the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d'honneur, and he pioneered tactics used today by the SAS and other special operations units worldwide.

Rogue Warrior of the SAS tells the remarkable life story of 'Colonel Paddy', whose exceptional physical strength and uniquely swift reflexes made him a fearsome opponent. But his unorthodox rules of war and his resentment of authority would deny him the ultimate accolade of the Victoria Cross.

Mayne also had a conflicted personal life, dominated by his mother. He never married and several of his contemporaries felt that his resentment of gays in the military reflected his concerns about his own sexuality.

Mayne was undoubtedly a complex character and in Rogue Warrior of the SAS the authors have presented a rounded and perceptive portrait of the man. Drawing on personal letters and family papers, declassified SAS files and records, together with the Official SAS Diary compiled in wartime and eyewitness accounts from many who served with him, the picture emerges of a soldier who, although a flawed hero, was unquestionably one of the most distinctive combatants of the campaigns in the Western Desert and Europe.

About the Author

Martin Dillon is also the author of several other books, including The Trigger Men, The Shankill Butchers, God and the Gun and The Dirty War.

The late Roy Bradford served with Army Intelligence during the Second World War and subsequently worked as a TV producer and writer. He was the author of two novels, Excelsior and The Last Ditch.

Paddy Blair Mayne was one of the founding fathers of the legendary SAS. He along with Stirling and Lewes designed the tactics and regiment that changed the art of warfare a fact illustrated by today's reliance on "special forces".

The book deals with the history, politics and motives behind the founding of the SAS but naturally focuses on the life of Blair Mayne the "most decorated soldier of WWII". Blair Mayne was a remarkable man, capped for Ireland and the Lions in Rugby he seemed to easily adapt into the role of soldier. He was certainly his own man, and the book features numerous descriptions of his insubordination and "independence". He probably should never have been allowed into the army never mind as an officer, but his role in the SAS fitted him like a glove. The book gives 1st hand account description of the man and operations (official and otherwise), but it just makes you increasingly curious into the Blair Mayne legend.

A well written book in basic chronological order drawing mostly on primary source material, good for those interested in the military or one of a kind people. Full of amazing stories about an amazing man.

Paddy Blair Mayne was someone who we would not know if it hadn't been for WWII. An amazing warrior brought to life in an un-putdownable book. Recommended for anyone interested in WWII or for anyone who wonders how people can change in a war situation and what bravery truly means.

I had read of Blair Mayne briefly in 'Gentlemen Jim' by Lorna Almounds Windmill and was intrigued enough to find out more, i was very glad i did. Mayne was the most decorated soiler in WWII but few people will know much about him if anything. The book is well written and kept me reading, i found myself putting the book down to try and make it last! Some of the missions he took part in (most of the time in the lead role) are incredible and hard to comprehend. In my opinion his achievements greatly helped towards the outcome of the the battle they faced at that moment and the whole war effort. I would agree with a previous reviewer about the postscript and how there was no need for it, if seems as though added at a later date.
Much lesser a man has recieved more recognition and this is such a shame. A great book and i shell be reading more on the subject.

'Legend' doesn't do him justice.
Fascinating man! His life and exploits are better than even some movie heroins! Why there isn't a film about his life I have no idea, even the BBC couldn't mess it up! Read more
