A blast of a story in my opinion, humanity has travelled the stars and two extra planetary empires the Norts and the Southers have waged the biggest and most destructive war in mankinds history. Nu-Earth is at the center of the conflict, not only is it orbiting a star system but is in close proximity to black-hole/worm-hole which is used to transport ships to almost any part of human controlled territory making the planet strategically important, and as a result war etiquette has been thrown out the window as all manner of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons have reduced Nu-Earth to a blasted, poisoned wasteland forcing the soldiers of both sides to fight in sealed environmental suits to protect them from the poisoned atmosphere and deadly toxins.
Our protagonist is a G.I. or Genetic Infantryman, soldiers created by the Southers to fight on Nu-Earth unhindred by a chem-suit by making them immune to the poisoned air and any employed toxin, his name is Rogue and he is the last of his kind. The rest of his comrades were wiped out by the Norts in the Quartz-Zone thanks to intelligence leaked by a certain Souther traitor general. Now with the bio-chips of his three dead comrades (if a G.I. dies his personality is stored onto a chip at the back of their skulls to be refitted into a new body, they can also speak) energised in his helmet, backpack and gun, Rouge goes AWOL to track down the traitor general to enact revenge, and no Nort army or Souther military police will stop him.
This is one of the best stories to ever come out of the pages of 2000AD, it was written mainly by Gerry-Finley-Day who is regarded as master by some at telling war stories and is beutifully illustrated by some of the comic greats such as Dave Gibbons, Colin Wilson and Cam Kennedy. Rouge Trooper is a roller-coaster of a ride full of twists and turns and I recommend it to those who are interested in the war genre.
