2.0 out of 5 stars fantasy too far 8 Aug 2010
By Mrs. A. Wright VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I regret that I have to write this review but I just did not care for Ms Lindsay's plot or characters this time. In fact I actually checked half way through to make sure I was reading one of her books. The plot was weak and seemed to be full of undeveloped strands.Rebecca and Rupert were fanciful characters that I just did not find believable and the supporting characters were no better. It was supposed to be a love story yet there was little connection between them. Espionage made an appearance but filtered out. Even the attempted murder scene was shallow. It was a follow up to the The devil who tamed her but it was a poor shadow of that book. It may be that I have come to expect too much from Ms Lindsay but I would advise anyone not to be put off from reading her other books her other books as this one is not typical. Bring back the Mallorys

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very exciting 27 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because it had a lot of good reviews and I thought the story sounded interesting. It's not a bad book but it wasn't one I couldn't put down either as nothing very interesting happened in my opinion. I only have two chapters left to read and I'm in no great hurry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Johanna Lindsey 27 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
I love Johanna's books, and always buy as soon as there is a new one listed. This is a follow on from 'The Devil Who Tamed Her', the link being that Raphael is Ruperts cousin.
I loved the book, I always like 'the thrill of the chase', and was not disappointed. Rebecca couldnt resist him, he was such a charmer. Rupert was sexy and funny, a really likable character, that no woman could resist. She was trying so hard to be imune, I had to smile. The story was brilliant, and reminded me a lot of her previous books. I do enjoy the intrigue.
Of course, I enjoy the Malory Family, but I have enjoyed all her other books too, her really early books written years ago. This story is not linked to the Malorys at all. It has a charm all of its own
This type of story holds my interest, I could not put it down
Well done, Johanna.....do we really have to wait another year for a new book???

3.0 out of 5 stars Expect a light read 18 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I was not blown away by this book, it was good simple read for a lazy afternoon. The main hero started to annoy me towards the end of the book with his lack of faith in Rebecca Marshall. Some parts are a little implausible so be prepapred to suspend your disbelief. The Americanisms also started to annoy me, it's trousers not pants! Pants in the UK is underwear. The word bangs does not even exist in the UK let alone in this time period - I'm not sure it would have even existed in America. Also it's Autumn not fall. I feel that these oversights in grammar can really affect the enjoyment of these sorts of period books.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time 28 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
This book was a huge disapointment for me. The plot was weak at best and I had the feeling that the characters were not fully developed, but rather bits and pieces were taken from other characters to create a semi believable storyline. For me there was very little continuity and I felt like huge chunks of the story were thought to be "understood" by the reader, but in reality were not.
I would not recommend this title to anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not so good 27 July 2010
By Val Birbeck VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I don't know if I've outgrown this author or if she's lost her "bite". The main story could have been so much better, the plot was there - young Queen Victoria's Buckingham Palace with 2 rival intriguers - but the main characters came together too quickly, this was the Victoria Age with Victorian Values.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could wait to read and fell asleep easily 20 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Normally, I love Johanna Lindsey's books because they can be very difficult to put away, they help me relax after a lot of the much more difficult reading I do as a professor, and they take me off into a fantasy world that I find quite colourful from Lindsey's perspective. This book, though, was hard to finish. First, it was hard to see the love between the characters when all they really did was resent each other much of the time. The plot is so thin that it could have been written in a 2-page summary. I found it particularly irksome that there were all kinds of "intrigues" which never quite became obvious or interesting enough to even question what was going on in Sarah's (side character)world or with Rupert. Maybe I missed something, but the further development of the "intrigues" would have thickened the plot significantly. Knowing Lindsey's other work, this development would have also been much more interesting. I had to wonder if this book was ghost written because it just wasn't the page turner I expected. I do hope, however, that others enjoy it.
