5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning better than the book, 19 Aug 2007
By Mr. Glenn Cook (South Cave, near Hull UK) - See all my reviews

I first saw this magnificent film years ago. The acting story and plot simply blew me away it was that good. I sat and watched it throughout with no distractions nor breaks. Peter O'Toole is magnificent as the Upper Class hero who seeks revenge for his fiancée's cruel death due to the Nazis. His revenge? To assassinate Hitler. As we all know he didn't succeed and here the story sets off on a cracking pace. Tortured by the Nazis (I won't give details!) He escapes and thanks to a WW1 German ex POW who respected the British he gets back to England. But here the plot twist even further, Britain is not at war with the Germans you see the Aristo's have more German cousins that Queen Victoria. So he is on his own! Soon framed he goes on the run. The Nazis seek to kill our hero so he goes to ground in England. Now imagine hiding yourself in rural England so no one knows you are there? A top English Lord/ Nazi agent is set to find him and does so. Here I won't spoil the plot but I was in tears at one incident!! And cheered at another. This is the only film that I have seen that is better than the Geoffrey Household book. O'Toole is simply magnificent and I believe this to be better than his Lawrence portrayal (some praise indeed). The ending on the film comes with regret that such a great film could go on for longer rather than some of today's offerings where the finish is a relief. I guarantee you will enjoy this film and it will stay with you a long time. Worth a chance? Yes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, 22 Jul 2008

Actually, I read the book before I saw the film and was even more enthralled and glad that I did. Fantastic plot - did it really happen??

Just brilliant, buy both, a "real action" film and highly plausible too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece in adventure movies, 22 Oct 2008
By J. Clark "hyperbolelad" (London England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first saw this wonderful film back in the seventies when it was first shown on BBC television and had been looking for it ever since.Firstly I came across a vhs release where the picture quality was attrocious they had used a very worn out print of the film full of scratches and jumps and the colour was all runny and blurred, then I bought a region one American release and the same print had been processed through a digital clean up process and was still scratchy, but the colours were much better, but I was delighted to have it to watch and have watched this beautiful atmospheric adventure movie several times over and still love it to pieces. Its amongst my ten alltime favourite movies so I am hoping this release may be a fully restored release this time of a movie that surely deserves the full works in restoration and extras, but whatever I love this movie so much it will be nice to have a UK release of it on dvd anyway. If you havent seen this yet please dont hesitate buy this movie now its a masterpiece of adventure in the style of the 39 steps with a brilliant cast, the amazing Peter O'toole, the lovely Maureen Lipman etc etc and also has the one and only wondrous Alastair Simm making his final movie appearance, abd a very rare appearance in an acting role by the brilliant playright Harold Pinter.

Kind Regards

Jim Clark aka poetrylad at youtube..
