3.0 out of 5 stars I'd like to give this book 3 13 Aug. 2014
By Sarah
Format:Kindle Edition
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Ideally, I'd like to give this book 3.5 stars. It was quick and easy to read, but I would have liked to see a bit more of the world generally.

I liked Zyra as a character, but I would have liked some more background on her. I liked her relationship with Mikaela, too, but I did think she showed herself to be still rather naive when it came to her interacting with her bounty.

The Amazon-like planet of just women was quite an interesting idea, especially the reasons as to why their society had developed in that way. What was also interesting was how it was made clear that, even though they saw men as more 'bad' than women, some of the women on the planet were still bad people.

I felt there was quite a lot of politics in this, which was good. Although things could have gone much better if the characters had been a bit more heroic, I could see where a lot of them were coming from.

I felt that the descriptions of the fighting worked really well. The book held my attention throughout and although I think it could have been a bit longer, it did work more or less the way it did. I felt that the flashbacks weren't necessary and could have been moved to the beginning of the book.

I think I would read the next book in this series to find out what will happen to the characters. This book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, so it would be nice to see how things go from there.

2.0 out of 5 stars Drama 4 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Zyra Zanr is a bounty hunter for the InterGalactic Alliance. Throw in an Amazonian planet, dangerous politics and a murderous Skringler, and you have the introduction to the Rogue Hunter world.

I was sold on the synopsis of this book. With the promise of the vastness of space, lies and politics, and a love/hate relationship between our main players, I was excited and ready for a vast adventure.

I was expecting Star Wars, but I got more of a courtroom drama.

To be fair, it was a creative story.
Zyra is initially a great character. She is focussed, confident, sexy, and more than capable of looking after herself.
Skringler is an absolute dick - and not just an endearingly off-kilter anti-hero. Hendrickson has given something brilliantly refreshing in writing such an unlikeable character.
Going back to the synopsis - I wish it didn't mention the relationship between Zyra and Skringler; primarily because it doesn't play a big part in this book. But also because I couldn't help but be disgusted at the hints that Zyra could like this guy with more than a physical attraction.

Unfortunately, there were a few problems I had with this book.
The setting:
New Venus - the world that has a global ban on men.
Seriously?
Ok, I can understand an oppressed gender rising up and rebelling, taking power etc. But to be so blinded by hate that they would destroy/banish all men from the surface of their world?
Does that mean they enforce killing men, down to the babies unfortunate enough to be born boys? Hell, what about the process of reproduction in the first place?
How do they enforce a world-wide ban? I can't even suspend my disbelief to imagine that every woman would agree to it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Firey Female Bounty Hunter 31 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I received a copy of Rogue Hunter: Inquest by Kevis Hendrickson in return for an honest review.

I looked forward to reading the adventure of Zyra Zanr, inter planetary bounty hunter. I was particularly delighted reading the forward from Hendrickson promising a book of  'grittier and more mature exploration of Zyra's adventures, the action more intense, the danger greater, and the stakes higher. If you love drama in your space opera, then you are in for a treat'.

I would like to congratulate Hendrickson for introducing a competent, capable, independent, female protagonist.

Unfortunately although the book started well, by the third chapter I was realised the writing was not living up to expectations. The character development was sparse and the plot even more so. Whilst characters made provocative decisions that moved the plot forward their motivation for decisions taken was at best partially and more often than not, neither explored nor explained. Indeed one episode appeared completely nonsensical other than to hasten the plot.

As I read onwards I wondered if perhaps the author had been influenced by chase scenes from Terminator films into which he transposed the Zanr and her quarry Boris Skringler, and seemed particularly cliched. I also puzzled throughout the book why her eye movements were described multiple times when there was no other character there to observe them dilating, widening, narrowing, etc. Weird..

The final plot twist perhaps devised to keep the reader interested in following the 'epic journey for the greatest bounty hunter in the cosmos' was again without any given rhyme or reason and I for one will not be perusing any further instalments for Zanr.
