Product Description

Product Description

3 Grid Angles in One Compact Package The patent pending Rogue Grid design features stacking honeycomb grids that provide 16 degree, 25 degree, and 45 degree spot lighting control. This means that photographers can choose among three different size grid spots using this small, lightweight system. Measuring 3.6" x 1.2" (92mm x 30mm), and weighing just 3.5oz (100 grams) with the included strap, the Rogue Grid fits easily into any photographer's bag. How does it work? The Rogue Grid's unique design utilizes precision-molded honeycomb grids that can be used independently for the 25˚ or the 45˚ spots, or stacked together to create the 16˚ spot. Because the honeycomb cells align precisely using the integrated alignment features, they can be stacked without creating unwanted shadows and reducing light output. When not being used, the stacked grids store conveniently inside the bezel. What does the light look like from a honeycomb grid? When attached to a light source, a honeycomb grid creates a spot of light with a gradual fall-off useful for adding dimension and depth to an image, or for highlighting important features. The angle of the grid determines the size of the spot projected forward, with smaller degree grids producing smaller spots, and larger angles producing larger spots. How are honeycomb grids typically used? Grids are often used on off-camera flashes as hair lights in portraiture, or for background or accent lights anytime a photographer is interested in highlighting a portion of an image for dramatic effect. When attached to an off-camera flash, grids help draw attention to an object, texture, or color, and can help to create a desired atmosphere or mood in an image. Easy to attach, and Includes a Pouch The Rogue Grid securely attaches to almost all standard shoe mount flashes using the included adjustable Rogue Tension Strap. Also included is a durable nylon storage pouch that accommodates both the Rogue Grid and grid strap.

As you would expect from the price the construction quality of the Rogue 3 in 1 Honeycombe Grid system is very high. It has a robust, well-made feel to it and is a well thought out system.

With this build quality (and price) this product is aimed at the hard working professional or serious enthusiast; in particular those doing a lot of portrait or still life work, probably using multiple light set-ups. You know who you are and can decide accordingly.

The sleeve (attachment strap) is made from high-quality, reinforced Cordura type nylon fastened around a flash with a Velcro strip (tension Strap). This Velcro strip can also be adjusted further by moving it between two stud fasteners on the sleeve so the sleeve can be accommodated on different types and sizes of flash-heads. (I use Nikon SB900s but also attached it to a smaller Canon 430EX.)

The honeycombs and bezel mount are moulded from strong plastic.

Together the components give every appearance that these are the gold standard of honeycomb grid systems and will stand up to years of heavy usage. (The system attached to a flash also looks `professional' and not Heath Robinsonish.)

The 3 in 1 design is clever and straightforward to use. There are two circular precision moulded plastic honeycomb grids, each of a different thickness. These are pushed into a circular collar - or bezel - that is then inserted onto the sleeve attached to the flashlight. Once inserted they and the sleeve look and feel secure; the more so on larger flashes.

The sleeve is pushed into a groove surrounding the top of the bezel to prevent light 'leakage' and keep the bezel in place. (If you want additional security reach for the gaffer tape.)

One honeycomb grid produces a 45 degree spread of light.

The build quality of the Rogue 3 in 1 Honeycombe Grid system is very high. It has a robust, well-made feel to it and is a well thought out system.
This product is aimed at the professional or serious enthusiast as it will get a lot of use and is made to last.

The sleeve (attachment strap) is made from high-quality, reinforced Cordura type nylon fastened around a flash with a Velcro strip (tension Strap). This Velcro strip can also be adjusted further by moving it between two stud fasteners on the sleeve so the sleeve can be accommodated on different types and sizes of flash-heads, I use Nikon SB910 and SB800

The 3 in 1 design is clever and straightforward to use. There are two circular precision moulded plastic honeycomb grids, each of a different thickness. These are pushed into a circular collar - or bezel - that is then inserted onto the sleeve attached to the flashlight. Once inserted they and the sleeve look and feel secure. One honeycomb grid produces a 45 degree spread of light, the other a 25 degree spread of light. Put the two together and you get a 16 degree spread, great for isolating objects or even for using with portraits to great effect.

In effect the 2 honeycombs act together as a snoot to focus light- this means you can use a wide spread of light for a group and a smaller spread of light on an individual ~ or to light just a part of a scene. Combine this with altering the power of your flash (and distance to subject) and it gives enormous flexibility in lighting effects.Add to this that you can fit gel filters to the front of the grid and the the effects you can produce are varied to say the least.

It's worth noting that because the honeycombs are circular they produce a circular spread of light ~ and its fall~off.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really useful accessory! 19 July 2012
By Paul Madge #1 REVIEWER #1 HALL OF FAME VINE™ VOICE
The function, form and fitting of this product are amply described by the other reviewers on this page and I generally agree with what is said. I bought this Rogue Honeycombe Grid to work with my Nikon D90 and Nikon SB900 flash - fitting is a breeze.

I have found this a be an excellent product which is very well engineered and it has added significant flexibility to my flash photography, especially, when used in conjunction with the Rogue Flashbender which I also own (and I have placed a review on the Amazon Product page). I mainly use it to manage the flash when taking individual and group photographs - I find the images are significantly better lit and there is scope to experiment.

As has been pointed out elsewhere on this page you can use this product in conjunction with gels for additional creativity - I was delighted that the package I received included a free gel to try.

Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rogue Flash Bender 18 May 2013

An excellent piece of kit. It's well made and it gives a new dimension to the quality of light from your flash. Fitting is just a little fiddly but honestly not a drawback and it's totally worth the effort for the results this little grid can give you. Packs up really small and with the bag supplied it'll squeeze nicely into a spare space in your camera bag.
Only drawback - aiming it and getting the light where you want it exactly is sometimes frustrating but that's the nature of grids and snoots. Recommended.
