Product Description

Roger Federer is a legend not only in the world of tennis but also in the wider sporting arena. With a record-breaking tally of 16 Grand Slam titles to his name, he shows no sign of slowing down and in 2010 added another Australian Open win to his collection, as well as taking the trophy in the end-of-season ATP World Wide Tour Finals in London. This authoritative and affectionate biography traces the rise of Federer, from his first tentative strokes with a tennis racket to how he dealt with being sent away to a training academy where he struggled to communicate in a French-speaking part of Switzerland; and how he handled the sudden death of his first real coach and mentor. It looks at his development as a sportsman and how he has matured into a family man with his marriage to Mirka Vavrinec and the birth of their twin girls. It also examines how Roger bounced back from arguably one of the most challenging periods of his career as, following a serious illness and a dip in form, his run of successive Wimbledon championship wins was ended and he was toppled from the number one spot by his long-time rival Rafael Nadal. In characteristic style, Federer silenced his critics by winning the French Open title for the first time, reclaiming his Wimbledon crown and ending 2009 at the number one position for the fifth time.

Chris Bowers had covered Federer's career up to Wimbledon 2007 in his first book: Fantastic Federer. I was hoping that this book would focus more on Federer's career and the events after Wimbledon 2007. I was disappointed as Bowers does not do this enough. The earlier chapters are repetitive for someone who has already read Fantastic Federer.
Bowers' analysis lacks depth on why Nadal has been such a nemesis to Federer. It does not go into what is it about Nadal's game and character that makes him have such an impressive record against Federer.
The book is sloppy, with the facts, in some places. It states that Federer beat Del Potro in the round robin stage of the 2009 ATP Masters in London. This is a mistake as the result was the other way round. It also mentions that Roddick did not come close to breaking Federer in the fifth set at Wimbledon 2009. This is a howler as Federer was down 15-40 when serving at 8-8 in the fifth set and saved the two break points with a wonderful serve and a superb drive volley under the most extreme pressure. This was one of the most important turning points in the match.
The book is worth reading if you are a die-hard Federer fan as it does cover some additional ground from his previous book. Hence the three star rating.

I'm new in tennis world. This book helped me have a better grasp of the sport itself and the YouTube clips of Roger Federer's matches. Love it!!

Great Overview of Perhaps the Greatest Tennis Player to Date 5 Sep 2011
By David P. Craig - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I thouroughly enjoyed this biography of Federer. The author does an excellent job of writing a balanced account of Federer with relationship to his personal life; tennis exploits; and contribution to others with his generosity. Overall it is a very pleasant account of Federer that will be a welcome addition to any tennis fanatics library. I learned a lot about tennis, and the person and work ethic of Federer. Now I am an even bigger fan of perhaps the "greatest" male tennis player of all time.

Not worth reading 9 May 2012
By L. Qi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Agree with some of the other negative reviews. This book basically just listed some known statistics without much depth or new information, It spent chapters and chapters try to persuade reader(with some lame statistics) that Federer is still the best player. Total waste of money/time.

I started reading some tennis book since my daughter began training for tennis. I myself love the game but am not a fan of any player -- too old to be a fan. The first book "Open" by Agassi is fantastic, and you've got to admit the guy is very honest in depicting himself. The book "Rafa" is even better, it's one of the most inspiring book I've ever read. I made "Rafa" a must read book for my daughter.

For this book, if you are an 18 year old girl who's a die-hard fan for Federer, and you are a bit heart-broken at Federer's recent performance, well, this book might cheer you up. Otherwise, turn around, don't waste your money like I did.

Not worth reading 13 Sep 2011
By David J - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
My expectation was not high because this book was not a real biography. However, I was surprised. There are hardly any interesting inside stories in it. Also the writing style is uninvolving and very dry.
I am thankful to Amazon for their 7 day return policy for Kindle contents.
