Book Description

6 Sep 2012

'Hope I die before I get old', sang Roger Daltrey over forty years ago, but it didn't quite work out like that.

The wild and passionate lead singer for supergroup The Who is still very much alive. The premature deaths of fellow group members Keith Moon and John Entwistle leaves Daltrey and Pete Townshend as the only survivors of the legendary band.

Roger Daltrey's life is extraordinary from start to finish: he was expelled from school and written off as a violent thug - before he made his first guitar out of a block of wood, and music and The Who became his salvation. For many years he was the vouce of a generation, strutting bare-chested on stage, swinging the mic around like a lariat at The Who's dynamic concerts.

Drawing on interviews with Daltrey himself, as well as his friends and fellow musicians, this is the most complete and revealing biography of one of rock's most powerful personalities.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly written and extremely flawed! 20 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
This is a real disappointment. It starts off ok but descends into yet another (badly written) story about the Who with the occasional reference to Daltrey. Page after page descriptions of the plotlines to some of the films he's been in are well worth avoiding. The most irritating thing though has to be the mistakes that even the most casual Who fan can't fail to notice. A wasted opportunity that leaves the reader thinking that Roger Daltrey was maybe a fairly boring guy when there must be a wealth of stories and annecdotes that are barely touched upon. The only interesting parts are the bits about the Who's manager and mentor Kit Lambert.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not so good 2 Jan 2005
Format:Hardcover
Roger Daltrey needs a Tony Fletcher type writer to get a true Biography of his magical career. This is a book that any senior in college could have put together with some heavy research. It is basically a book of articles organized in a linear fashion. A poor attempt and a poor read; leave it on the shelf.

2.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING 26 Jan 2013

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book could have been so much better.

I bought it particularly because I wanted to read about his solo work beyond the Who. His three 70s albums are dealt with in less than two pages (120-121) - scandalous for a book that is exclusively about the man and not his band.

Daltrey's definitive biography is still waiting to be written...any takers?
