Controversial Irish documentary about the state of the Irish republic in the late 1960s. Director Peter Lennon interviewed ordinary people, patriotic sportsmen and politicians, as well as priests and young children, to glean a picture of his country, and let his interviewees unwittingly reveal the depths of their small-minded prejudice. The documentary painted a portrait of a country that was censorious and repressed, and caused great controversy after one screening in Dublin. It was immediately pulled and has never been seen since in Irish cinemas or on Irish television.
Essential watching if you want to experience a 'real' feeling of the negative effects that both the politics and politicians of the modern Irish State had on it's peoples - aided and abetted by the all powerful Catholic Hierarchy who although attempting to put a modern face on it's relationship with the people, was, nevertheless, contradictory, condecending and hypocritical.
Through it all though one sees glimpses of the Irish Race and character, traces of independence, humour and surviveability!
A film to watch again and again, just to be reminded how Church and State conspired (with some honourable exceptions) to abuse and betray a whole nation.
As the "Making Of" extra on this DVD mentions, there are very few records of this kind for the sixties in Ireland. Makes the state of the country today seem all the more miraculous. Anyone familiar with the revelations that came to light following the death of Father Michael Cleary will find it hard to keep a straight face watching the interview presented here, where he is purported to be the young, trendy acceptable face of the modern Catholic church. Cracking stuff :-) Was trying so hard not to mention it...but try watching this followed by Father Ted for the perfect poke-fun-at-Catholicism theme night...
A must-watch for those studying or with an interest in Irish history. A damning indictment of the State's politicians and leaders, the sad thing is most of the comments regarding the Republic's leaders could have been written today and not in the 1960's. And for those who never understood why Northern Irish Unionists never wanted to join up with the Republic then this will explain all.
-Also includes an interesting 'Making of' about 30 mins long.
