Yes, it's true. I was sceptical too. To tell you the truth, I bought this album before seeing the J.D. show. Spotted it in Virgin megastore in a certain large shopping centre and had to have it. So.
About the music... I am going to give this CD 5 stars because I think it's an excellent interpretation of the play, if you ask me what are my favourite tracks on it, I'd say the versions of "the Time Warp", "Super Heroes" and "Eddie's Teddy".
If I have any criticism about the recording it's about the actual actors, and shouldn't make you not buy it because of that. I thought the Janet's voice was far too brassy to play a Janet (sounded more like a Magenta to me), for example.
If you're looking for *originality* of interpretation etc, then there isn't that much new here that hasn't been done before, although I like the more "rocky" (that's as in rock-music-orientated, dears!) arrangement of the music, it was "heavier" and "thicker" than some of the recordings I've heard (original London cast comes to mind.).
If you saw the show and enjoyed it then you'll love this recording, and if you're just an avid collector of Rocky soundtracks.... then you should get it, because you'll enjoy it :) Just don't expect anything really *new*.
