Product Description

Though hardly Punk rockers, the band thrived amidst the shock and outrage of the time, Wayne's trans-sexual tendencies adding an edge to the proceedings. Singles such as FUCK OFF and EDDIE & SHEENA are here, along with EP and album cuts. Wayne, who later became Jayne County, chose the songs, and the sleeve notes tell her story in graphic detail.

Wayne, now Jayne, County and the electric Chairs are a greatly under rated band. They played a most unusual form of Punk that incorporated rock & Roll, check out "I had to much to dream" to almost Country & Western type songs as in "Worry Wart, sadly not on this album.
This compilation contains some of the best songs by the band. "Berlin" and "Waiting for the Marines" in my opinion are the two greatest tracks by the band.
Don't be put off by some of the song titles such as "If you don't wanna f**k me" Swearing in Jayne\Wayne County songs has an almost light hearted feel and is really necessary to the flavour of the song.
As you may of guessed Jayne County is a transexual and in the track "Man Enough to be a Woman" Jayne sings a biographical number giving us a hint of what it is like to long for a sex change.
Toilet love is a fettish song but again don't be put off. It is a light hearted number that will bring a smile to your face. I have a friend who sings it at parties when called for a song and it always gets the crowd going.
Overall this album contains some classic numbers that sadly a great number of people are not aware exsist. Buy this album and you could change all that. Once you have listened to it you will not want to take it off your CD player. That's a promise....

Always an outsider, Wayne got lumped in with the UK punk movement but he actually pre-dated it by a few years. His outrageous New York stage shows of the early 70's plugged him into that Iggy/Lou/Alice/N.Y.Dolls/Bowie axis; indeed he piqued the latter's interest enough for him to be linked to Bowie's Mainman organisation. The latter link went nowhere and Wayne re-launched himself a couple of years later via the emerging CGBG's scene of Patti Smith/Ramones etc. although he didn't come within a million miles of US success! He then de-camped to Britain, formed a band - The Electric Chairs - and, unbelievably, got into the charts!!

This compilation covers that late 1970's period of one-off singles, ep's and a trio of albums. The material spans a wide variety of genres and is all the better for it. There's some standard, muscular punk-rock in 'Rock N Roll Cleopatra' and 'Out Of Control'. There's a sort of Addams Family country hoe-down (!) on 'Storm The Gates Of Heaven' whilst 'Evil Minded Momma' is Elvis in a parallel universe! 'Eddie and Sheena' taps into the spirit of 60's girl groups whilst 'Things Your Mother Never Told You' has an experimental, futuristic sound.

The lyrics - one of Wayne's strengths - range from thought provoking ('Man Enough To Be A Woman') to hilarious ('If You Don't Want To F*** Me, Baby F*** Off'!); the latter having Jools Holland on barrel-house piano too! You'll NEVER hear that - nor 'Toilet Love'! - on the radio, even today. That's a good enough reason alone for buying this classic album.

This guy/gal could have been bigger, but Wayne/Jayne County's lyrical selection has ensured that his/her music has stayed clear of the airwaves. Were it not for this, I'd rate this CD a bit higher, as it features plenty of punk-influenced energy and, to be fair, The Electric Chairs are technically a cut above your average punk pand. 'Rock 'N' Roll Resurrection' is, for instance, an intensely exciting piece of rock and roll. This isn't a disc full of thrash, however, with the band well capable of varying their approach. 'Man Enough To Be A Woman' is a stunning, slower song of some gravity. Meanwhile the Jekyll & Hyde device in 'Eddie & Sheena' makes for a priceless track. As for the most offensive material, much of it is straight r&b with expletives and tasteless references to bodily functions. I confess I own a copy of the 'Blatantly Offensive' EP on gold vinyl which intrigued this teenager when it was released, in much the same way that 'God Save The Queen' did. All the tracks from this are here. Good entertainment then, but slightly soiled.

Confrontational early New York punk 6 Oct 2002
By Pieter Uys - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
County was a confrontational artist of the seventies who no doubt must have inspired later artists like Lydia Lunch, the New York No Wave scene and performance artists like Monte Cazzazza. She was both a pre-punk and later a star of the punk scene, much like Iggy Pop. The sound varies between a type of decadent and trashy glamrock, in the vein of the NY Dolls, or garage rock like on this version of I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, or straight angry punk as on tracks no. 5, 12, 17 and 20 above. In fact, these last four songs first appeared on her famous Blatantly Offensive EP that appeared in colored vinyl way back in 1978. Most of her punk hits are collected here, like Storm The Gates of Heaven, Things Your Mother Never Told You, Eddie & Sheena and Man Enough To Be A Woman. This album contains most of her best, although I miss other great tracks like the wistful, Nico-esque Tomorrow Is Another Day (reminiscent of Sunday Morning on the Velvet Underground's "Banana" album) and another UK single, Trying To Get On The Radio.

A PUNK ROCK MUST! 24 Jan 2013
By Jimi LaLumia - Published on Amazon.com

Wayne County is one of the foundational stepping stones of the 70's
NYC punk scene, and this "Best Of" collection sounds as timely now
as it did back then. While the albums were never released in America,
Wayne (who is now Jayne) is a seminal influence, and you can't be considered
a real punk acolyte if this isn't in your collection!

One of the greatest unsung heroes of the early N.Y. punk scene (and still going strong) I had the fortunate chance to play in her back up band at a club gig in Seattle in 1988, Jayne who used to be Wayne summons the spirt of true Rock N' Roll like a shaman posses. And when you get right down to it the best performers are those that can channel that something special and undesirable with mere words, all the rest are just going through the mentions of what "They Think" it is to be a rock star... There's a few other compilations that are better, Let Your Backbone Slip comes to mind but regardless if you like raw no holds bared Rock N' Roll do yourself a favor and check out the Immortal JAYNE COUNTY.
