Musical Failure Rules,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rockin' In Wisconsin - Cuca Records Story Vol 3 (Audio CD)
With 3 CDs of regional music from Wisconsin-mostly straight from the Cuca label-this is the one which included the original Muleskinner Blues by the Fendermen-a single which became a hit almost by accident and enabled the group to become Prime Members of the One Hit Wonder Club with what was a remake done by the label which purchased the master-Soma.Apparantly no problem at the time as Cuca had not actually signed them but would have more difficulty in the future having to sue for back royalties-which they got and which was ploughed back into the business thus more artists.
Wisconsin as the 3 CDs emphasise in the sleeve notes, was nowhere near a center for rock'n'roll-its main music was Polkas! So this is all about musical failure. Its about early garage bands influenced by Gene Vincent and its about time standing still as there was not that much influence from the British Invasion The Fendermen had at least lasting careers in spite of their One Hit Wonder status.A few others went into country music and there was just one Hot Boppin Girl in Karen Wells-who was wonderfully off key and had only cut the single because of her parents hoping to turn her into Brenda Lee Great stuff!

futile though it may be, here is what i have to say about this cd: this is volume three of the cuca records story: a studio that operated from roughly 1959 to 1969 about 25 miles north of madison, wisconsion. oddly enough, the 3rd volume covers the beginning years. the rockabilly times of 1959-64. rockabilly in 1960? 61? 62? 63? and 64? you may well ask. remember, this was wisconsin. evidentally they were a year or two behind the times out in farm country. fun disc, though. no genius unearthed here, but a lot of pretty fine guitar slingers. if you love rockabilly, this is a nice set of obscurities for your collection. if you love the magic of music's ability to transport you to another time, this might be up your alley as well. if you are strictly a stravinsky sort of person, this will not do. look elsewhere.

Spectacular CD!,

From the amazing opening track "Bitter Feelings" by Larry Phillipson to the closing track "I'm Moving On" this is a winner of a CD. Ever since I've put it on my CD player I've been Rockin in Wisconsin! This is great compilation of early rock and roll and rockabilly. More than one collector has recommended this to me and I'm glad they did, it's been one of the finds of the year.
