Until very recently Laurel Aitken's music had been presented by a variety of companies without any degree of cohesion, but that all changed when Pressure Drop obtained rights to his catalogue and started releasing intelligently complied, well presented sets that gave some sense of order to his output. This particular collection focuses on the best of the tracks Laurel cut for Melodisc's Blue Beat label in the years immediately following his move to London from Jamaica in 1960 and as one would expect from the Godfather of Ska, the quality is top-notch, from the opening Ska Boogie number through to his excellent version of the oft-recorded 'I May Never See My Baby'. In fact if you're a serious fan of Ska and Skinhead Reggae, I'd recommend you try to obtain all of his Pressure Drop compilations, especially as there is virtually no overlap in the recordings.
