A blues shouter supreme, Wynonie Harris was right up there with Big Joe Turner and Jimmy Rushing. This immense 4cd box set contains all his recordings from his first in 1944, with the Lucky Millinder band,to the middle of his prolific and successful period with the King label in 1950. Sadly underrated today, Wynonie by 1950 was one of the biggest RnB stars. A big personality with a voice to match Wynonie was an irrestable presence. Good as his early recordings for Aladdin and Apollo were, the big hits didn't come till after he moved to King in 1947. "Good Rockin' Tonight", "Good Morning Judge", "I Want My Fanny Brown" and many more beside were great records full of humour and sass. Unfortunately some of the later King sessions have been omitted due to public domain considerations. For more about Wynonie read the biography "Rock Mr Blues" by Tony Collins but in the meantime go out and get this essential and great value release.

Vey good value 4 cd set, I especially love cd 4
a few songs that I would have liked are missing but really for the price I
can't complain, noticed that one of the cds by itself is selling for the same price as this set
auto-rip wasn't included either but it was still simple to add to I-pod so not really an issue

Wynonie Harris had a few singles issued here in the 50s on the Vogue label but it was not till the 70s that an LP appeared.
Harris was a master of the risque blues-which sounds like comedy nowadays-though its doubtful whether the few singles issued here would have been given radio play if they were even heard by the BBC

this is probably one of the best and most comprehensive introductions to Wynonie Harris you will get. 71 tracks over a 6 year span starting in 1944, just try and stop dancing, weeping and chuckling to yourself - that's the variety you get here. plus an excellent compact 50 page booklet to read as well.
