The only thing I had ever heard from The Nashville Teens was their breakthrough single 'Tobacco Road'. I used to have this cassette called 'Hard Up Heroes' which carried a load of obscure tracks from artists and groups rooted in the early sixties that became famous in the late sixties/early seventies. As I don't have that cassette anymore I can only remeber a handfull of artists/groups like Them (Van Morrison of course), The Birds (Ron Wood), The Zombies (Rod Argent & Colin Blunstone). I'm not exactly sure why The Nasville Teens were on that cassette (maybe one of the members can enlighten me?) but I remember how I loved their version of 'Tobacco Road'.
As I was looking for something to add to my CD collection as I stumbled onto 'Rockin' Back to Tobacco Road: Rare & Unreleased Tracks'. As this was the cheapest CD I could find I decided to get it and I must say the CD is a pleasant surprise. It's not a standard greatest Hits CD but a collection of live tracks recorded to be broadcasted on radio. It's similar to teh several 'live at the BBC' CD's that have been released the last few years.
If I were to describe The Nashville Teens on this CD I need only one word: Eclectic.
Of course they had a reputation as a reliable rock 'n' roll band. They toured with Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and Chuck Berry. But I also heard a few psychedelicatessen, the odd ballad, as well as impressive blues and rock tracks.
Most of it seems to come from an earlier out of print CD called 'The Hungary Sessions'. I have visited the Nashville Teens web site and saw that they were guests there for several times but I would love to get some information about how that all came about. It's a shame that the liner notes of the CD don't go into that story.
Again, I hope one of the members can shed some light on this. There must be a great story behind a British group touring behind the Iron Curtain.....
