It's a race, it's a chase, it's a fast and furious game of cat and mouse!

Coppit is great fun for all ages as you try to "cop" your opponent's cap and head back to home base before getting "copped" yourself! Anything can happen and usually does as you travel around the board...but remember, the winner is the player whose caps are last in play.

So watch out, or you might just Coppit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strategy game for all ages, 20 May 2005

The basic idea of Coppit is to capture all your opponent(s)'s pieces before they capture all yours. Although the board is a standard square that folds in two like most other board games, the playing area is shaped like a wheel, with squares around the rim and along its six spokes. There are safe squares at the various junctions and midway between junctions - it is obviously an advantage to place pieces on those squares, as they are not only protected against capture but also prevent opponents from occupying them.

Each player has four pieces (plastic cones) and initially starts with them in their home area, which is a triangle between two spokes and part of the rim. Thus, up to six players can take part. Players take turns to throw dice to bring their pieces out of their home area and move them around the board. Unlike most board games, the pieces have no particular destination. The sole purpose is to capture rival pieces and to return to home base with the capture. Herein lies the fascination - in trying to get back home, somebody else might capture that piece with its capture. So everybody has a chance to retrieve captured pieces before they are lost forever - at least until their last piece is captured.

When just two players take part, the more skilful player will win more often than not, though the need to throw dice gives the weaker player some chances. When three players ar involved, two players may sometimes unite against the third so in that case the strongest player may have difficulty winning - however, if one of the other two looks like establishing a winning position, the other potential loser may decide to switch their allegiance and unite with the strong player to improve their own chance. When four or more players take part, the possibilities are endless although in such cases, people normally start by looking after themselves. There are so many pieces on the board to begin with that a lot of captures and re-captures happen very quickly.

With a lot of people playing, this is a very exciting game where you need a lot of luck. With just two playing, it is a very strategic game where skill is a significant factor. Either way, it's fun for all the family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coppit Board Game Review, 1 Jun 2009

An instant hit with my housemates after a few beers at a dinner party. An old family fave, I had to buy it after visiting home and playing it with the folks.

Simple game with a good mix of tactical plays and blind luck. Even when your players have been captured, one man ("Capp") can go on to victory.

I'm amazed that this game is still available. This was a family favourite with us over 30 years ago! I really can't think of any other board game that held our attention like this one did (although I have fond memories of 'Colditz'!). The advantage over some other board games is the fast pace and also you can be planning your own moves while everyone else is moving their pieces so it never feels like you are waiting around. Great fun for all the family. (As an aside, I wonder if the makers of Trivial Persuit based their board on Coppit!)

This is a game that I played when I was young and was a family favourite then. We bought it and now play with my four year old and two year old and it is as good as ever. Read more
