Product Description

Review

'In this book, Paul Brown brings the topic alive. It has to be one of the most readable science/technology focussed books of the year. Brown has an excellent journalistic style, and pulls the reader on relentlessly through the tales of technical inspiration and human weakness that litter the history of the rocketbelt. The book overall is a delight to read, and the story is genuinely one where reality is stranger than fiction. Recommended.' --Brian Clegg, Popular Science .co.uk'

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - amazed that this is all true, 12 July 2005
I first saw what I know now is a rocketbelt in the James Bond film and I must say I thought it was just a stunt. Then I found out the rocketbelt in the film was actually real, and I began to read everything I could about rocketbelts, but I found there is one good website but no good books, so I began to wait for this book to come out. It is everything I hoped for. It tells the reader how rocketbelts were really built in the sixties after being used by science fiction stars like Buck Rogers! Even the Nazis tried to build one. But once the real rocketbelts were built there were many problems, including an amazing fued (the "Caper" mentioned in the title) between one set of rocketbelt fanatics that revolves around what is known as the "Rocketbelt Murder". When reading this bit I could hardly wait to turn the pages it is so exciting and strange you just have to find out what happens next. Then I read that many people across the world are trying to build rocketbelts, including one guy here in England! In the book he is test flying his rocketbelt, so maybe soo we'll see it buzzing over our heads! A great book, for anyone who ever fancied flying a rocketbelt, or anyone who loves a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hobby turned obsession??, 16 Aug 2007

Who would have thought that an invention like the rocketbelt would cause so much trouble? Before reading the book I didn't think it possible but it just shows the lengths that some people will go to to achieve their ambitions!
This book is well written and is easily accessible for those with little/no prior knowledge of the rocketbelt phenomena. An added bonus is that it doesn't bombard you with technical vocabulary but concentrates on telling the remarkable tale of the hold that the rocketbelt had over the men involved...with gruesome consequences!
I would highly recommend it to readers who enjoy a real life story, tales of crime and (although not essential)a passion for rocketbelts!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing story of gadgets and murder - and all true!, 16 Aug 2007
The first thing to say is that a rocketbelt is not just a special effect from a James Bond film, it is actually real! This book starts out by explaining how rocketbelts were built by the US Army in the 60s, and even the Nazis tried to build one. The main part of the book happens in the present day and is about three friends who built the world's best ever rocketbelt but then had a huge feud over it which led to violent fights, kidnapping, court cases, and of course what is known as the "Rocketbelt Murder". I could hardly wait to turn the pages it is so exciting and strange you just have to find out what happens next! A great book, a very original mixture of gadgets and crime that reads like a good novel even though it is a true story. Recommended for anyone who loves a good read.
