Reviews

Quirky teen comedy drama starring Reece Thompson as Hal Hefner, an average sophomore at Plainsboro High School in New Jersey. As well as suffering the daily indignities of a typical teenager, Hal is further socially debilitated by his terrible stutter. However, when he falls in love with the star of the debating society, Ginny Ryerson (Anna Kendrick), he soon finds himself immersed in her ultra-competitive world of high school debating, with its players, its politics and its own set of rules.

A warm, funny little film. It is a shame that good films can so easily vanish under the radar of mainstream culture whilst turds with a BIG campaign make money. This film is a superb comedy of the Wes Anderson school but with none of the slightly jarring self referential tones that Anderson churns out in all his films.
I really cannot praise this film enough, watch it.

'Rocket Science' is a sweet take on love, vengance, competition & triumph. Hal (played superbly by Reece Thompson) is the anti-hero of the film, he has a stutter but when given the opportunity to be on the debate team he joins with little hesitation. Then he falls for Jenny (Anna Kendrick) the beautiful girl that gets him on the team in the first place.
Now onto critique. There isn't really anything bad I could say about the film its all very well done, it manages to be funny & touching without being soppy.
Hal's love for Jenny is refrshingly innocent & genuine, its hard not to care about what happens to him.
One of the funniest characters in the film has to be Hal's much younger pervy little friend Lewis, who in one particular scene puts on a bra.

What's really nice about the film is the way Hal is portrayed, he feels isolated & misundertood & undervalued & the whole time watching the film I really wanted everything to turn out well for him.
From the director of Spellbound comes this poignant indie, that I would recommend to anyone who liked Thumbsucker & has a passion for odd ball comedies.

When I saw this DVD in the shop there seemed to be a big contradiction between the encouraging reviews from a number of respected publications - and the fact that it was £1 in the bargain bin! Having watched it I think I can understand both. It is not the formulaic mainstream disadvantaged kid overcomes adversity and wins girl type of film, but it is unconventional and very amusing at times. So I enjoyed it and laughed on occasions, but for me I expected more from it. The ending seemed to come out of nowhere (making me think 'Was that it?'), without, to my mind, a satisfactory conclusion to some of the different strands going through it. So do watch it and laugh - but don't expect too much.

This is a great little indie film and is perhaps the very best example of everything you come to expect from the word 'indie'
The film is quirky and interesting but it's greatest asset is that it doesn't conform to Hollywood movies.
Though funny the film is very realistic, perhaps from a pessimistic perspective, but realistic none the less.
The characters are all very believeable and the plot isn't the traditional hollywood one where things always magically go right for the main character just in the nick of time. The film has been reviewed as a bit depressing but I would say its realistic.
A great example of a bitter-sweet film, fans of Wes Anderson will love it.
The film feels like it was written and directed by someone who had total control and was not forced to make changes in order to please the average audience and give them what they expect. It's rare ability to not conform to the standards of hollywood is what makes it so emotionally engaging as it never once feels false.
I know I am repeating myself but it makes films like Juno and Little Miss Sunshine (both amazing indie films) feel mainstream.
The actors are all great and Anna Kendrick who went on to be great in Up In The Air shows that she had the gift from a young age.
Different, real and heart warming. Although perhaps depressing in places it makes all the little happy moments pull at your heart strings even more.

We really enjoyed this Film. So refreshing to watch a teen movie that has smart, articulate, witty young people instead of the usual dummies portrayed in this genre. Intriguing story line, complimented by superb acting and script.
