Writer-director Theodoros Bafaloukos responded to Jamaica's siren call all the way over in Greece and came to the island to make this 1977 movie about a band of Rasta men/Robin Hoods getting their own back at the expense of those perennial bloodsuckers, the "uptown top rankings", as men of money and position are called in Jamaica. The reggae star-studded cast is undoubtedly the movie's most rewarding feature, though some fans have objected to the demeaning sight of the incomparable late singer Jacob Miller threatening a friend with a knife over a purloined chicken leg or the equally great singer Gregory Isaacs exacting chump change for unlocking a tourist's rental car. However, these and other great reggae figures are also seen here in full and glorious performance at their peak. In fact, this film provides our only extended visual record of Miller's kinetic performance style and one of the best pieces of footage on Isaacs. Although Rockers doesn't approach the multi-layered complexity of The Harder They Come and it does betray a little superiority now and then to its characters, there are plenty of laughs as well as insights into life at the time for Jamaica's growing Rastafarian movement. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace makes an unlikely though quintessentially Jamaican leading man as he moves between wooing the rich man's virginal daughter and making pit stops at the shack he shares with his wife and children. His band of accomplices is priceless, and the scene in which each struts in his own "stylee" to Peter Tosh's "Stepping Razor" is alone worth the price. --Elena Oumano

Product Description

Wienerworld proudly presents the Blu Ray edition of the classic reggae film Rockers, to coincide with the film s 30th anniversary since its release. A riotous burst of energy and colour, almost documentary in style, Rockers is a cameo-packed gutsy thriller of the dread-locked, ganja-smoking drummer Leroy Horsemouth Wallace s attempts to succeed in the cut throat Jamaican music biz which provides much insight, amusement and education. The film captures reggae at its musical apex with a vibrant and magnificent reggae soundtrack now digitally re-mastered from the original 35mm film made in 1978. Witty and unpretentious, the DVD even comes with a glossary of Rasta Patois . Includes the following songs: We a Rockers, Tenement Yard, Stepping Razor, Fade Away, Slavemaster, Police and Thieves, Jah No Dead, Satta Amasagana

5.0 out of 5 stars Steppin' Razor.. 10 July 2010
THE essential film about life & music in Jamaica in the 1970's. Originally meant as a documentary, it is the simplest story, told in a riveting way. The cast is a who's who of reggae at the time, all playing themselves, including a brief appearance from the late, great Joe Gibbs. It is honest, natural, funny and sad but above all, a beautiful film with the best soundtrack of any film ever made, ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars the best musical ever..... 6 Aug 2012

Rockers [25th Anniversary Edition] [DVD]

I may be biased here because i love all the ingredients in the film, but this is a very well made, acted and scripted piece of work. The restoration has given it a further quality, and the music is just the best in the world. A perfect showcase for the less commercialised, but legendary reggae pioneers, the film hits straight to the heart of Jamaican rebel music culture. I think it's more extravagant than the grittier more serious 'The Harder They Come', and therefore more endearing to a potential market - a real treat, not to be missed!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic movie 19 July 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
It's a bit slower than I remember but still a classic, with loads of faces passing through. A must-have for all fans of reggae. One of the few chances to see Jacob 'Killer' Miller in action as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reggae and Dub all-star classic. 19 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Rockers is one of, if not the best Jamaican film ever. The central character is reggae drummer, Andy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, who, down on his luck, gets some loans together and buys himself a motorbike, paints a Lion of Judah on the petrol tank and starts driving round the island selling records (usually recorded that day) to the shops and dancehall soundsystems.
When his bike is stolen he discovers the Mafia are involved and begins a Robin Hood-style reliberation of goods back to the people.
The film looks great, shot in rich colourful stock that suits the lively setting but the star of the film is the music. The films stars a veritable Who's Who of the Island's biggest stars, Burning Spear, King Tubby,U-Roy and and a whole heap more. All the way through the film, the skanking doesn't stop, you tend to bounce to the music all the way through the film.
The other interesting thing is the very strong rastafarian accents that are hard to understand, but the film sensibly has subtitles for the harder parts.
