Product Description

It was the twang heard 'round the world: Rockabilly was born out of country, bluegrass, jazz, and the blues in the 1950s, becoming rock 'n' roll and ruling the world. Here's the story of Elvis Presley's first Sun records that inspired all. And here's Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and many more rockabillies from the golden years of 1955-1959, in a book chock full of photos, collectible memorabilia, movie posters, rare records, fashion, and rebel lifestyle. The story continues today, with a rockabilly revival that began with stars, such as the Stray Cats and Robert Gordon, spreading around the globe from Europe to Japan. Today, rockabilly is better than ever, with bands like Rev. Horton Heat and others playing the music and living the life from Memphis to Helsinki to Tokyo. There's still good rockin' tonight!

This is a very impressive looking book packed with lots of pics and with some heavyweight contributors including Greil Marcus & Peter Guralnick. I've only just got the book and haven't read it yet but just flicking through it, i've found some inexcusable mistakes. Number one being a whole page feature on "Fake" Rockabilly artist Jerry J Nixon. The Jerry J Nixon story was invented about 10 years ago by Voodoo Rhythm records in Switzerland. They are modern recordings made to sound old (although only the most cloth-est of cloth ears would be fooled- sorry Cosmic K). Voodoo Rhythm made up a great and elaborate story about Mr Nixon, did some fake but reasonably authentic looking pics and invented a label called Q Records (it's self a spoof of the X label). I find it incredible that this could be included in this book. This goes to prove that the editor obviously knows or cares very little about Rockabilly. A lot of the record labels used as illustrations throughout the book are of Bootlegs. There are six pages on the Stray Cats but only four on Charlie Feathers, that can't really be fair can it?. There is some really good stuff too, with long articles on Pat Cupp & Glen Glenn amongst others but this book should have been given to somebody who actually knows about the music to be proofed before it went to print. For a more accurate history of Rockabilly check out Max Décharné's great "Rocket In My Pocket" book.

This is a very comprehensive look at the world of Rockabilly, epitomised by early Elvis. Some of the artists were unknown to me, and probably quite obscure, but worth seeking out on Amazon and Youtube. The production values are high, with many good photographs. As well as biographies of many artists, there is coverage of early recording techniques, e.g. at Sun, and the types of instruments used. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in rock 'n' roll or retro rock styles, a most informative book.
