What a fantastic box set this is! The compilers of this box set deserve a lot of credit for providing us with a treasure chest of Rockabilly music at such a cheap price!

As a brief summary, there are 40 CD's in total, each have 25 songs on them ranging from some of the most famous Rockabilly recordings ever made, and then contrasting them with some of the most obscure recordings from artists that nobody has heard of. With 40 CD's and 25 songs on each, there's a grand total of 1,000- that's right, 1,000 songs!

'Rockabilly' is a term that was first used by Bill Flagg (a relatively obscure singer who made one or two Rockabilly songs himself.) This was the joining of the two music genres that were big at the time- Hillbilly and Rock. The so called 'Daddies' of Rockabilly, like Hank Williams had no idea of what they were creating! Rose Maddox (of The Maddox Brothers & Rose) even said, "We thought we were just playing Country Music". Although Rockabilly failed to gain much chart success, it was bought to daylight by the 1957 recording 'Rockabilly' by pop crooner Guy Mitchell, which was a #1 hit (The song features in this box set and is the one and only title from Guy Mitchell that features in this box set.) Although the song isn't strictly Rockabilly music, it captures the spirit of the genre as a whole and is a worthy inclusion in this set.

Anyway, back to the product. There's a great deal from the big names of Rockabilly included in this set, so if you're a fan of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Wanda Jackson, Ricky Nelson, The Johnny Burnette Trio, Gene Vincent, Roy Orbison or Carl Perkins- you're in luck!

I would have given this a five star rating were it not for the fact that there are too many non-rockabilly songs in this collection. 'Giddy up a ding-dong' by Freddy Bell? I dont think so; 'Summertime Blues' by Eddie Cochrane? nope; 'Dynamite' by Cliff Richard? surely not.
Anyway, apart from stuff like the above there is some solid gold in this collection.
One caveat here though, some of the songs are alternative versions, and if you are not familiar with the original tracks you may be fooled into believing that the alternative tracks are the original versions. 'Long Gone Daddy' by Pat Cupp is an example, the version in the collection is a more jive orientated one, whilst the original track is a well-known rockabilly bopper.
But dont let me put you off purchasing this set, it really is worth the money and I heartily recommend you add it to your collection.

I bought this a couple of months back, seduced by the (then) £10 cheaper price and the 'novelty' of 1000 r'billy tracks in a box. Previously, I'd never subscribed to the notion that you can have too much of a good thing, but Dynamite pretty well puts that idea to bed!

Presented in a nice sturdy card box, graphics representing a wooden crate, CD-cubed size, so it'll fit nicely on your CD shelf, the box comes with a chunky 148 page booklet (says 140 on he outer box). Opens with a few pages on the history of rockabilly from the compilers' point of view. There follows, alphabetically, notes on almost all the artists, pictorial content made up of LP/EP/pic sleeve 45s, many of European origin, some sheet music shots, at least one contemporary poster, and no, I've not 'studied' it all yet.

The main course. All the obvious, Elvis, Gene, Carl, Wanda, Brenda, Johnny Burnette...maybe 30-odd tracks, leaving well over 900 to check. With every intention to plough thru 'em all, maybe at half a cut at a time, by about CD 9 I was waiting and by the 10th, I had to go and have a long lie down in a darkened room, fanning myself with a damp copy of Now Dig This, the UK's premier rock & roll mag. (See their web page). Whilst I'd had a good wallow in mid-70s based nostalgia, this was overload in spades! Most every rockabilly and r&r artist you could reasonably think of was here (though I can still think of many who didn't make the cut), so that'll put off long term collectors, but if you want an instant collection of this material, Dynamite would do it. Apparently, if you want a full track listing (!), I'm told you'll have to check Amazon's German site.

A few gentle whinges. "Rock-a-Billy" by Guy Mitchell? Compiler joke I guess. Why the Chief cut of G.L.
