I'm an old guy who was introduced to Superchick by my tween daughter. (Actually, I introduced her, but she got me hooked.) I'm not much into Xian music, but these guys earned my respect because they had great songwriting as well as delivery (and they sang about stuff I value). All their stuff (i) rocked, (ii) was chock full of hooks, and (iii) was fun. We just got this album in the mail today and while it pains me to say it, I think it is a step down for Superchick. Did they hit a writer's block? All the rockers are samey anthem-type songs ("Rock what you Got, Rock what you Got, Rock what you Got" or "I'm alive, I'm alive, I'm alive" or "Hey, Hey, Hey" or "One more, One more, One more" or "And we are, And we are, And we are" or "I'm Gonna, I'm Gonna, I'm Gonna"... You get the point.) All these songs seem to be cut from the same template--melodically and rhythmically. Halfway through the album you get the sensation that you're listening to the same song over and over again. Noticeably absent are the hooks that come from good songwriting exemplified in songs like "We Live". And where's the fiesty punk grrl fun which came out in songs like "Bowling Ball"? Point blank: musically, this album is disappointing. It's totally average...something I thought Superchick was not. Nevertheless, I remain a loyal fan and look forward to Superchick's next effort as I believe they are capable of so much more.
