5.0 out of 5 stars Good, honest book, 19 Aug 2008
I recently got this book & a few others out the library, in order to research the music industry for a friend who is making inroads towards becoming a professional singer/songwriter.

The book is well written & presented & covers many aspects of the industry, including utilising the internet. I'm not sure if the author oversells the internet aspect, but I suspect that time will increasingly prove him right. Certainly, it's a great way for a band/artist with a fanbase to start making a profit from songs & merchandise.

The inclusion of interviews with A&R scouts, managers etc is excellent & gives a solid idea of what is expected from an artist, & what an artist should realistically expect. I've been to a few meetings with my friend & her prospective manager, & much of what we discussed is closely reflected in this book. A diamond piece of advice was: don't even dream of signing a contract until an entertainment lawyer has looked it over. How true!
I also like the way the author carries over how hard it is to succeed as an artist, let alone a profitable artist. Anyone who isn't dedicated, persistent, hardworking & patient need not apply!

All in all, a great book for anyone who wants to avoid wasting years of their life while they figure things out the hard way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, 14 Feb 2008

(REAL NAME)
This is one of those books that is very difficult to put down. I found myself reading it at every given opportunity during a stag-weekend recently! It's really easy to read and not too big or heavy like a lot of other music books.

It covers most aspects of the music industry in a succinct yet very informative way; it includes info on publishing, A&R, management, agents, promoters, royalties, a bit on legal stuff, forming bands, record deals, recording methods, distributing (very important if you want people to have access to your music!) gigging and even a bit on how to get funding for your band. The only part it didn't go into much detail about was writing good songs - if you're not doing that already then there are tons of whole books written to help you on your way.

The author also includes insights from people within the music industry as well as recommending the best companies to go to - for example to get your CDs pressed and tons of websites that are really really helpful.

THE book to have if you've got anything to give to music :)
