The rock / classical combination. It's been with us for a long time, with highlights including Metallica's incredible symphonic album S&M. On 'Rock Symphonies', though, this marriage really finds its potential. David Garrett may look like a Cobain-esque rocker who picked up the violin after touring in a grunge band, but he is as technically gifted as any of the great and celebrated names in classical music. He has gained a reputation for flawless and dynamic live shows, and that's where this album really succeds - the violin is the star of the show, no doubt, but without sacrificing any of the power that made several of the album's 'rock' covers - Smells Like Teen Spirit, Walk this Way - stand out and earn their status as classic tracks. These tracks hook you and lead you in, but it is on the rocked-up versions of Beethoven's 5th and tracks such as 'Asturias' that the sound is at its best. If you can't bear the thought of a note-perfect, sweet violin tone being beaten marred by guitars and a massive drum sound, then maybe stick to David's core classical repertoire. Otherwise, if even purists can open their minds a little and let a sense of fun creep in, 'Rock Symphonies' is pure genius. Long may Mr. Garrett reign!
