Book Description

18 Feb 2013
Rock the Shack takes us to the places we long for. For the first time in the history of humankind, more people live in cities than in the country. Yet, at the same time, more and more city dwellers are yearning for rural farms, mountain cabins, or seaside homes. These kinds of refuges offer modern men and women a promise of what urban centers usually cannot provide: quiet, relaxation, being out of reach, getting back to basics, feeling human again. Rock the Shack is a survey of such contemporary refuges from around the world from basic to luxury. The book features a compelling range of sparingly to intricately furnished cabins, cottages, second homes, tree houses, transformations, shelters, and cocoons. The look of the included structures from the outside is just as important as the view from inside. What these diverse projects have in common is an exceptional spirit that melds the uniqueness of a geographic location with the individual character of the building s owner and architect.

Good for dreamers of an outdoor cabin. More a collection of good photographs than an extensive review of the cabins themselves. Its also not a review of the materials used. But the pictures are gorgeous.

Fantastic photos, good quality hardback book. Bought it as a gift for an architecture enthusiast and it was very well-received. Great product at a fantastic price (Amazon price was more than 1/3 off the price of the same product in the Tate Modern bookshop in London)!

Great, in depth, detailed sections on each property, with something from the most basic to the most complicated. It is quite contemporary for the most, but very inspiring, with lots of ideas to use.
This is one of the few interiors / building / "dream home" books I've actually found useful and use as a reference and for ideas.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unrealistic 7 Mar 2013

The book looks as though it is on simple shacks or getaways. Unfortunately it is a collection of architectural experiments and as such is not very practical . If you have a 100K or more to spend the book might give you some ideas. However for everyone else I would recommend "my cool shack" or "Tiny houses"

Not as good as I thought... There are some great pictures and concepts, but more information (as well as a few more pics) for each structure would have been nice.

Beautifully laid out architectural book on modern small space habitats! I love the international landscapes serving as a backdrop for these great 'sheds' - not to miss!
