5.0 out of 5 stars but boy could he play guitar... 13 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
ahh where to start.. this is a fantastic offering by the late great randy california and crew , I write as someone who was fortunate to see randy at the ' night of the guitars ' in liverpool way back in 1988 ( ish ) , already conversant with the works of spirit at the time , i was entranced with the sounds that he produced.
this triple cd comes from the previous decade, when spirit were stripped down to a three piece or as the term is commonly used ' power trio ' and quite a muscular outfit they were..
A lot of the songs feature twice, but let that not put you off , you will be entranced by the echoplex layering and route one driving rock , with some fuzz bass and the driving elder statesman of mr skin thumping the tubs behind the magnificient one with the hair.. some of the songs do miss the brss arrangement , ie like the song ' mr skin ' but hell this is the raw live sound , not the studio stuff , please rest assured you will love this set , and at such a reasonable price you simply can't go wrong..

5.0 out of 5 stars 1977 Spirit 22 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
A real treat for Spirit - Randy California/ Ed Cassidy fans.. a huge selection from a great touring period. If you loved the original live lps from this era which introduced me (via the 45" "Nature's way/ Stone Free") -you will love this 3cd box set-fabulaus. Well worth it -as are all the later albums. They had fabulous reviews from the Reading Festival theyplayed at the time with loads of encores!

4.0 out of 5 stars A SPIRIT OMNIBUS. 28 Feb 2013
By Peter
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I recommend this to all music fans out there. A good collection of tracks from an under rated guitarist who sadly now no longer with us, but we are fortunate to have his recordings as his legacy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great, underappreciated sixties band 13 Sep 2009
By R. Rushing - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Although the uninitiated would be better off checking out their first four albums, this is a fine overview of Spirit's work. Since there is no officially released live album from "the day", enjoy this and appreciate the greatness of the late Randy California.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best 28 Sep 2011
By Ricsheepy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've listened to this set quite a bit and really appreciate how Randy, Cass and Fuzzy belted it out. First two discs are live and are chock full of old and late 70's Spirit tracks performed with skill and just a little of that Rockpalast "foot pedal Moog synth" noise, but mixed well this time. Great Spirit live performances like "1984" "Animal Zoo" "Mr. Skin". Plus there are tracks from Randy's past and future "Zandu" "Downer" and band standards like "All Along The Watchtower" "Walking The Dog" "Like A Rolling Stone". Plus "Hey Hey Hey, it's a rock n roll day..." (Rock and Roll Planet) as just a taste of the highlights.

The third disc makes this another great "period set" (the other being Salvation '74, another 3 CD release). 26 unreleased tracks to give clues to where Spirit could have been and still had to go in Randy's non major label music output.

Rock and Roll Planet starts the hit parade and doesn't stop. Fave tracks are "Midnight Train" "Zandu" (was released on Tent Of Miracles in 1990 along with a shortened "Brian Berry Blues" called "Borderline") You can hear how raw the track was on this disc. BBBlues sounds like someone miked the rehearsal with a portable tape deck, but rocks. "So Happy Now" and the extra acoustic songs including "Monkey See Monkey Do" (from Future Games) are a real taste of Randy's talents.

After you get into Spirit, this set is essential. Kudos go to Mick Skidmore for writing descriptive liner notes and keeping Randy and Spirit's music alive by producing such great releases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent late 70's overview. 31 Oct 2011
By Richard P. Mccabe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I've always liked the original Spirit (their first 4 albums are classics). That said I lost interest after the group broke up in the early 70's. I was lucky enough to see the original 5 members in a reunion concert at Santa Monica Civic around 1977. Possibly best concert I ever saw. Neil Young even showed up for the encore and Randy California tried to push him back off stage. California had an ego to match his talent. Anyway this is an excellent purchase for anyone who loved the original group. About half the songs are old favorites mixed in with a few covers and lots of new (as in late 70's) songs. Each CD is over 75 minutes long and you get almost 4 hours of music here. I've bought several CD's of Randy California's recently released archives. He passed away in I believe the late 90's. Tent of Miracles and Cosmic Smile are both very good. This is even better.
