This 'two on one' CD is particularly useful in completing the process of making all of Mud's 1970s LPs available in the digital media. In April 1977 Mud signed to RCA records, releasing a number of singles and these two albums - "Mud Rock On" in October 1978 and "As You Like It" (note the Shakespeare-esque cover artwork!) in October 1979. Although the group's halcyon days of hitmaking were over, and none of their RCA output proved commercially successful, there was no decline in quality standards...
Both of these LPs mixed Stiles/Davis originals with an equal number of cover versions, including classic rock and roll era songs like "Cut Across Shorty" and "Walk Right Back" (possibly a missed single for the group) on "Rock On" whilst "As You Like It" opened with an energetic reading of Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover" and one of its singles was a medley of "Why Do Fools Fall In Love"/"The Book Of Love". Additionally the group tackled Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" and the mellow-sounding John Kongos song "Slow Talking Boy" (both of which were issued as singles) on "Mud Rock On". The original group songs, several of which display a marked Steely Dan influence, both complement and contrast the covers. Production duties on "Rock On" were done variously by the group, veteran Status Quo producer Pip Williams and ex-Springfields member Mike Hurst, whilst the group supervised the sessions for "As You Like It" themselves.
"Mud Rock On" featured the definitive lineup of lead singer Les Gray, guitarist Rob Davis, bassist Ray Stiles and drummer Dave Mount augmented by session keyboard player Brian Tatum, but by the time of its follow up, changes were afoot. Brian Tatum became a fully-fledged member and, in early January 1979, the late, great Les Gray quit to star in Jack Good's "Oh Boy". Subsequently only five of the songs on "As You Like It" feature Les' vocals. Nevertheless the vocal spotlight devolved ably on Ray (for the funky title track), the late, great Dave Mount on the mock reggae "You'll Like It" (another single) and, most notably, on Brian ("Dream Lover", Johnny Otis' "So Fine" and his own "Heaven Was Meant For You").
The set also includes two bonus tracks pertinent to each original release. "Mud Rock On" is given the 'standalone' single "Just Try A Little Tenderness" and the alternative (B-side) version of "Let Me Get(Close To You)". "As You Like It" benefits from the addition of two singles B-sides : the Shadows-like instrumental "Run Don't Walk" and "Don't Stop", originally locked on the B-side of "You'll Like It".
Although commercially unsuccessful, this era was musically rich for Mud.
