Product Description

When Danny Lancaster gets a call from an old friend it looks like a chance to swap work and women worries in Brighton for a sunshine reunion.
Danny hasn’t seen Pogo since they fought together in Afghanistan. They have war stories to retell, beers to drink.
But Pogo is broke, sick and in serious trouble. It started in Gibraltar smuggling cigarettes to pay his debts. Now his Russian boss has taken on a dangerous job for a mysterious businessman. A priceless package must be smuggled into Europe across the narrow straits from Africa.
But unseen eyes are watching. Lives are in danger. A game of Russian roulette is just the start of a deadly clash where two continents meet.
The two friends are way out of their depth. And Danny must make a decision.
How far do you go to help the man who saved your life?

More About the Author

I've spent most of my working life as a journalist and was pleased and surprised to win an award for my travel writing.
Before all that I tried my hand at a few things including furniture removals, photography, teaching and running a magazine group.
Travel writing is not all cocktails under the palm trees but it's a fantastic job that's taken me to more than 40 countries, from the pure white wastes of Arctic Finland to the great deserts of Namibia.
Images of the townships of Cape Town, Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Havana Vieja, Ho Chi Minh City, Wadi Rum and many other places will stay in my mind forever.
I received the Ed Lacy travel award in 2007.
I've visited Greece many times and this has sparked a long love affair with Western Crete. The mountains, coastline, the food and people make me wonder sometimes if I lived there in some previous life.
Another interest is my family tree. I've traced the ancestors back to William of Byfield, a farmer in 1600s Northamptonshire, just down the road from Shakespeare.
I love maps. They might seem old fashioned in the age of GPS but they tell stories, make promises. I've collected more than 2,000.
Military history is another keen interest and I'm also a fan of books, strong cheese, good beer and wilderness.
I married Fran in Gibraltar in 2006 and have a daughter, Zoe. I live in Hove and London when I'm not in Western Crete.
I have written four crime thrillers featuring Danny Lancaster, a former paratrooper and Afghanistan veteran turned private investigator. They are:
The Wreck Of The Margherita
Death Squad
Rough Diamond
Rock Hard

This is private investigator Danny Lancaster's 4th outing and he leaves his adopted home of Brighton for sunny Gibraltar to help out an old Army pal. Without giving away too much his mate is up to his neck in the brown stuff - working as a hired gun for a ruthless criminal gang. The plot involves Russian mafia, a mystery Mr Big, a shady outlet of the British secret service and one very special cargo. Probably the most violent of the Danny series so far, this is as much a thriller as a whodunit that leaves you guessing to the very end. If you like Jack Reacher you'll love this British version

5.0 out of 5 stars Is the best still to come? 5 Feb 2014
By Kathie
Format:Kindle Edition
This series just keeps getting better- it's a quick read, but the plot is complex with some real heft to it. Clearly, Bill Todd did some meticulously thorough research and, as usual, his observation of people and places is sharp, but never sour.
Rock Hard is an unfaillingly gripping thriller that screeches to a halt rather than a conclusion - and leaves us wondering when and where Danny will surface next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny delights 7 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
DANNY LANCASTER's latest appearance is more brutal and complex than his previous outings as he finds his loyalty tested to the limit when he heads to Gibraltar to help one of the comrades who saved his life in Afghanistan.
The soldier turned private eye is out of his comfort zone, away from his support network, and a pawn of forces with disparate agendas and more clouded morals than our straightforward, do-the-right-thing hero.
He's got some serious love interest too, while he battles the baddies in fine style, his cunning, quick-thinking reactions helping him stay alive and - just about - on the case.
As the body count rises we also discover that sometimes one leg is better than two and, as the action builds to a pulsating climax away from the beautifully-recreated micro-world of the British Rock, author Bill Todd leaves us all wondering...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gibraltar resident 19 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not many people manage to show Gibraltar exactly as it is whilst carrying on with a storyline - thoroughly enjoyed the book and found all the references to Gibraltar so true. Mr Todd certainly did his homework - will read more of his books now.
