I'm not sure how I would rate this movie if I had not seen the Robotech saga. As a standalone sci-fi animation it, as some one else has already said, strictly by the numbers.

The story brings together characters from all three story arcs from Harmony Gold's Robotoch series. Rick Hunter is seen, as opposed to mentioned, Dana Sterling is actually drawn appropriately, and Scott is back, complete with Ariel.

The movie starts from just before the attack on Reflex Point, but from the view of the Mars force, not the resistance, then proceeds onwards in a very typical Robotech type story, though with less music than normal. It's nothing special, but reasonably well done. The animation suffers from being late 1990s computer art, but that's still a huge improvement on the second and third parts of the original story. The plot is also a lot less cringe worthy.

Being Harmony Gold it means English language only, no subs, but then it was possibly commissioned by them as it has no association with the 'real' Macross arc.

In summary, if you are a Robotech fan then get this, while nothing special it's well done and entertaining. If you're not, then don't.

I am a very big fan of robotech and really enjoyed the series and the books, I bought this as I had recently bought the robotech series pack and I was very disappointed. The Story starts off from the point of the attack on Reflex Point in the series, and shows the Expeditionary Force showing up and preparing for battle against the Invid.
The animation is good, there is some computer CGI also, usually for ship models. The characters you will recall from the series do not look the same, a few voice talents are still there i.e. The Regis. Typical anime in that the weoman are all waif like with huge chests. Watching it, I just could not get ingrossed, you don't get time to know the characters that die along the way and the whole thing seems quite rushed although being approx. 1hr 20 mins. The ending comes out of nowhere and you are left thinking "what the hell?" as the credits start to roll.
The main bad guys do not make much sense as you find out nothing about them until 10 minutes are left of the film really, there is one battle then nothing more and end of film. I actually fell asleep watching it the first time round :P
Also, an annoying point is that the film is done as one chapter on the disc, so if you miss something you cannot skip, you have to sit there rewinding/fastforwarding which I have not seen before.

Overall, I would not recommend it unless you are a very big fan who wants all of the Robotech series, even at this price it seems too much to be honest. If you want your fond memories of the series to remain intact give this a wide berth! I will not be watching it again.

Finally a follow up to a series from my beloved 80's. Many fond memories as a kid and the Saturday morning ritual watching the robotech series.
As a result I was a little bummed with this movie. Previously Robotech was streched (yes sometimes too streched) over a series which gave you time develop and explore the characters. The limited time frame meant that the characters are somewhat stunted. The evil enemy "the shadows" are appropriately named as there is zero information about them. Personally I like my films to develop the villian's character as well, basically I want to know why I have to hate them.

Still it is Robotech with all the cool spacecraft so it wasn't all bad.
