Flippin' Marvelous 26 May 2004

Format:DVD
Having enjoyed Robot Wars when it was first broadcast, I decided on a whim to buy this and the other two DVDs in the Robot Wars Ultimate Warrior Collection.

Each disk follows a common format. Presented by the robot builders themselves, we learn about the design, construction and evolution of each robot and get a chance to see their finest battles.

Razer - Probably the best of the 3 disks. Team Razer are immediately comfortable in front of the camera. Their enthusiasm shines through. We get to see Razer's landmark battles from the early mechanical failures through to their eventual two world championship wins. Along the way, we learn a good deal about Razer's design and development. This disk adds a bonus section of frequently asked questions. 5 stars.

Chaos 2 - The creator of Chaos 2 is a fine engineer and one of the best drivers in Robot Wars. However, he is less comfortable infront of the camera. This disk concentrates less on the development of the robot and is poorer for it. However, the featured battles are extremely entertaining. Robot after robot is hurled around (and even out of) the arena. Not even the house robots are safe! 4 stars.

Hypnodisc - This disk was a real surprise. I hadn't expected to enjoy it as much as Hypnodisc has never won a major title but what battles it has had along the way. Hypnodisc's first two opponents went home in a cardboard box, so total was their destruction! Like the Razer disk, we get to hear a lot about Hypndisc's development and this is one robot that's developed a lot, even to the point of a total redesign and rebuild. More than any other robot, Hypnodisc has gone from strength to strength in terms of destructive power. Hypnodisc may never have won a major title but for laugh out loud mayhem, this disk is the tops. 5 stars.

Format:VHS Tape
One of a set of videos about the best known robots in Robot Wars, also available on DVD. This video traces the history of robots made by well known roboteer George Francis and his team. His previous robots, Robot the Bruce and Chaos, are discussed and footage of their fights is included. All the Robot Wars fights of Chaos 2, up to and including Series 5, are shown. George Francis explains the design of the Robot and shows how it has developed in a series of short interviews. For fans it is fascinating to learn more about the robot and the makers. The presence of all the fights of a favourite robot on one tape is a good idea - a compilation tape of all the best moments.

Buy this video if you are a fan of Chaos 2, consider it if you are a fan of Robot Wars. Fans of Hypnodisc or Razer would probably prefer the other tapes so if you are buying for someone else check first!
