Apart from the fact there are no pictures of the film on the box (all the pics are from the original robot jox) I was prepared to give it a go as I was a fan of the original when I was a kid!
Its a tv movie really, but that's not always a bad thing (some of my favourite films are cheap b movies and tv movies!). Our hero is a square chinned pilot of the only remaining giant robot (a giant scorpian robot), usual scenario, hates authority and is always in trouble. For some reason even though there are acts of terrorism and sabotage by a group of rebels going on, the Scorpibot is still used to take passengers sightseeing! The boss of the "good guys" is busy selling smaller robots to a visiting general from the Eastern nation who is very friendly (hmmm). Our hero susspects them from the start and looks for proof but when he finds it they fire him instead. As you expect the Scorpibot is captured and the general starts to terrorise the "good guys" while our hero and his partner are drowning their sorrows at being fired. They go for a stroll in the desert where our heros partner used to hang out stealing robot parts in the past and after a bit of a root around come across one of the original fighting robots like the original film (but its been sitting there for years with so its all rusty and old looking). Our hero takes control and kicks some Scorpibot butt!
The original is based in a time where nations settle their differences by fighting with giant robots and its quite clear that the countries involved are USA and Russia as the cold war was still a threat when the film was commisioned. In this film the good guys are still loosely USA/The Western World and the bad guys are Eastern this time not russia.
Essentialy a poor film but some of the robot scenes are ok. Only for fans of the original really!
Time to try Robot Jox 3 now, re-named Crash and Burn (probably to get away from the franchise!) to see if its up to much!!
